Mass Effect 3 players in uproar over in-game photo used for female character

Mass Effect 3 gamers are in a uproar over BioWare using what appears to be a stock photo from Getty Images as the basis for an in-game picture of a certain female character in the game. Kotaku has the goods – but don’t look if you wish to remain unsullied. That’s all we’re saying on the matter, you can use your own discretion when clicking through. Game’s out now in the US and on Friday in the UK.

Some people need to get out more if they’re in ‘uproar’ about this.

Gamers get upset over the stupidest shit sometimes it makes me somewhat sad.

It’s a free picture, one that’s quite beautiful (kudos to the photographer) and Bioware used it as inspiration. Ok, so they didn’t whip something totally original up but really, you would get angry over this?

Bioware or their asian art subcontractors also lifted another pic from deviantart. And used it in the ending scene. The damning pic is circulating on /v/ and other chans.

Bioware? Being lazy?! WAIT! Let me call the president!

After all of the filler content in Dragon Age (90 per cent of the game was filler content), and all of the obnoxiously re-used assets in Dragon Age II, is there really anyone who wonders at this point whether Bioware are lazy or not?

#8 lol, I would feel like hurting someone too if that happened to me.

Even though I hadn’t seen the photo before, i knew ages ago how the character would look. Talk about predictable.

PS a lot of developers would use time saving techniques. Wouldn’t you if you had a deadline? If someone wanted to draw an eagle in Adobe Illustrator, would you search on google images and trace an eagle? its essentially labelled your work if you’ve modified it even a bit. Going by this logic, you could say that all users of Adobe Illustrator have stolen other peoples work. However, as long as people don’t have the picture/drawing registered as intellectual property its up for grabs and it would certainly make life easier.

Only this generation of youths could consider dozens of people working for years on a 50 hour epic RPG “lazy”.

I won’t deny I’m disappointed by the picture, especially considering its huge significance in the Mass Effect story, but calling the entire company lazy because of this is pretty ridiculous.

It gladdens my heart to see the sheer amount of effort some guys will go to, to strike out at a piece if throwaway entertainment that has somehow offended them.

Thank the fucking lord these sad, yet dedicated nerds don’t put their mind to something productive. They’d take over the world!!!

That kinda sums up how I felt about the whole thing after the first Mass Effect.

I don’t know if it’s lazy neccesarily, it’s just completely uninspired. Somewhere between one and two they just ran out of steam (pun intended!).

I can’t say I cared about what Thali might look like. The whole character is built around the suit, but diehards did seem to care, and so it’s still pretty damn cheap to wave them off with a stock photo. That’s only a paid license away from randomly googling it.

It’s not great when you’re out in the media touting how the game was practically made “with the community”. What a load of crap :P

Its fairly easy to sweep this under the carpet as people being mental over something small but it shows that they deeply cared about the series.

In fact this specific muck-up is galling because of the teasing that went on through-out ME 1 and 2, hell remember the romance scene from two where she removes the mask and you still don’t see her face?

Yeah to end the back and forth between the developer and fans over one of the most beloved characters in the series like this is just a bit silly. Then again it is Bioware and treating their fanbase like a battered spouse seems to be par for the course.

So what? Really? People are mad because someone used freely available things in their work. If any of you have ever used wikipedia for something then you are committing the same thing too. Really, internet is full of nagging people who are a complete failure in their lives and like to bark like dogs on the net.

I deeply care about this series, as a game franchise it’s probably my favourite of the lot. And saying that, Tali is also one of my favourite characters.

But if it wasn’t for someone recognising the picture, this story would never have been noticed. And even though it has, I still can’t see why people would get upset.

I can imagine the majority of Mass Effect players don’t give a flying toss about it.
