Dark Souls review flood is go, HD video shows tutorial

Monday, 3rd October 2011 10:12 GMT By Patrick Garratt

The first Dark Souls reviews have gone live ahead of a general 5.00pm UK time embargo, showing high scores. Get all the scores and HD, narrated video of the tutorial sections inside.

Dark Souls, the spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls is apparently harder than Ron Jeremy overdosing on Viagra. I didn’t see too much of that in my play through the opening sections, as you can see below, but From’s sadistic fantasy RPG still managed to freak me out.

Take a look.

The review embargo’s now lifted and we’re posting everything for you below. As ever, if you have a review you want us to link, put it in the comments.

Dark Souls releases in the US today and in Europe on Friday.

You won’t get very far lol :D

My guess is that it’s gonna score mostly 7s, 8s and a few 9s, for being too hard & too similar to Demon’s Souls.

Still my most anticipated game of the year though. :^D

  3. Joe Anderson

@2 You could be wrong. ;)

I often am, and in this case I especially hope I missed the mark. Like Dead Space and Vanquish, Demon’s Souls is a game I personally loved the shit out of, but didn’t quite garner the critical acclaim or market success I thought it deserved.

  5. Lloytron

I’m looking forward to this one. Demon’s Souls wasn’t as hard as they say. OK so yes it was a complete nightmare at first, but once you learnt to be cautious, develop a strategy, and get used to dying a lot then it became a lot easier.

No doubt I’ll be pulling my hair out again come the end of the week though!

This game has creeped up the mst wanted list for me. I’m actually looking forward to this more than I am Rage. Obviously, I’m only talking about the near future. Batman’s going to rape everything in October.

  7. viralshag

I love when Vanquish comes up in comments. Mostly because I loved that game.

    #7 3 years ago
  8. Ghost_Dog

Not sure if they’ve broken the embargo, but Metro have gone with a 9/10.

    #8 3 years ago
  9. Runcle

    GamesTM also gave it 9/10.

    #9 3 years ago
  10. Patrick Garratt

    I’ve added those scores.

When’re the Rage & Arkham City embargoes up?

  12. Blerk

I really wish this had a demo.

    #12 3 years ago
  13. YoungZer0

@2: You make it sound like 7,8 or 9 are bad scores.

    #13 3 years ago
  14. Telepathic.Geometry

Not at all, but I also think that those exceptional games are deserving of 9s and 10s, which are exceptional scores.

    #14 3 years ago
  15. Dralen

It’s amazing how most people have just totally forgotten about RAGE for this, especially considering all the massive praise it was getting from Journalists at E3.

    #15 3 years ago
  16. YoungZer0

@14: Disagree. Most reviewer already give 9′s and 10′s away like it’s free candy. 9 or 10 means it’s for freakin’ everybody. Which Dark Souls is clearly not.

    #16 3 years ago
  17. freedoms_stain

How do Dark Souls and Demon Souls relate? Might see if I can pick up Demon at lunch.

    #17 3 years ago
  18. Rudderless

I disagree with the assertion that 9 or 10/10 means it’s for everybody. If that were the case, all niche games would get lower marks purely because they don’t appeal to a wide audience. You can have a brilliant game that isn’t for everyone, just as you can have a brilliant film that isn’t for everyone. There are plenty of arthouse movies that many cinemagoers wouldn’t find appealing, but which fully deserve their five-star appraisals.

  19. Rudderless

Oh, and The Guardian’s (embargo-busting) review is up:

    #19 3 years ago
  20. viralshag

@ freedoms, I have no idea how they tie together but I highly recommend you try getting a cheap copy of Demon’s Souls. It’s a great game but it will give you a good idea if you should spend your money on Dark Souls.

The game’s not for everyone but worth trying. ;)

    #20 3 years ago
  21. Telepathic.Geometry

@16: Well obviously the scores mean different things to different people, but for me those games were all thoroughbreds and deserving of the highest accolades possible. A 7 is not that. Take for example the Majin game. I know that that game doesn’t deserve a 10, even though I love it, so I’m happy for it to get a 7 or an 8.

Games like the ones I mentioned are works of fine craftsmanship in my books, and deserve recognition as such.

But yeah, opinions and arseholes. Standard disclaimer. :^)

  22. Ireland Michael

Anyone who hasn’t played the original and is interested in this, you really need to understand something. It’s hard. Really hard.

And we’re not talking slightly challenging. We’re talking sheer cliff faces here. Some of you might be thinking “Oh, I bet I can totally handle it.” You’ll be the ones to die. Again and again, and again.

If that sounds too intimidating, you will want to stay well away from this game. Otherwise, you’ll love it!

    #22 3 years ago
  23. YoungZer0

@18: I’m not talking about about story, genre, music or whatever, but playability. It should be possible for most gamers to play and master the gameplay easily.

    #23 3 years ago
  24. YoungZer0

@21: A 7 is fine. Just because you enjoy the game doesn’t mean it deserves higher recognition. If you enjoy it that much, why don’t you enjoy it for what it is, instead of what people think it is?

Great example: I love Kane & Lynch. Don’t give 2 fucks about the score.

    #24 3 years ago
  25. Ireland Michael

@23 You clearly have a different definition of what the term “mastering” means than the dictionary does.

Anyone can learn to play chess. That doesn’t mean they’re going to win.

    #25 3 years ago
  26. Fin

    Eurogamer went with a 9

    #26 3 years ago
  27. Telepathic.Geometry

    @YoungZero: I don’t think you understand what I’m saying.

I never said that a 7 isn’t fine, and I never said that because I enjoy the game it deserves higher recognition. I also never said I don’t enjoy it for what it is.

    But look, whatever.

    #27 3 years ago
  28. K-V-C

i absoluty loved demon souls it wasnt hard as people made it out to be as long you been cautious and be patient and learned from your mistakes then you would do fine most people played the game like a hack and slash which you shouldnt

    #28 3 years ago
  29. DrDamn

Disagree too. 9 or 10 shouldn’t only be reserved for games which are for everyone. If it’s a stand out example of the genre/type of game then it deserves the score. The review should make the reasoning clear though. Anyone buying games on the basis of scores and not the text get what they deserve. :)

    #29 3 years ago
  30. The_Red

@28 Couldn’t agree more. I’m a player who couldn’t even finish 50 percent of Ninja Gaiden 2 on normal difficulty but finished Demon’s Souls twice (The only unfair / NG2 like part for me was the Maneater boss fight which I had to play for 8 hours straight to beat).

    #30 3 years ago
  31. Erthazus

9 and 10 should NOT (!) Never be reserved for games which are for everyone. Who said that crap?

9-10 are the points for the quality of the game. Quality for F sake.

It’s the measure of a game if it is good, bad or excellent. Not to make fat Bob happy so he could know that he’s mom is going to buy it because it is for everyone.

To begin with, all games are for everyone despite it’s difficulty. There are also Age ratings. But to know if it is for everyone or not you should judge it for yourself from the reviewers text.

Been playing since Sat and it is superb. Beautiful, harrowing, lonely and f@ck me hard.

    Love it… :)

p.s. My neighbours must have heard some choice British swearing over the wklend as well but as ever with DS, all my mistakes were my own fault.

  44. YoungZer0

@29: Yeah, you’re right. Guess i was thinking one thing and saying something else. A sport game can be great, but will never be for me. Having that said, i think i’ll avoid Dark Souls. Demon’s Souls frustrated the heck out of me. Had many cheap deaths and i don’t really have the time to sit down and play it slowly.

    #44 3 years ago
  45. Anders

Wow, nothing lower than 8/10 or 4/5 so far. Might have to check this out.

    Great video as usual Pat.
Did you get much further and if so how hard is it?

    #46 3 years ago
  47. freedoms_stain

Been playing Demons Souls, just fannied about in the 1st area for a bit… So far I wouldn’t say it’s hard, but I can see having to start from the beginning of the area and beat the same easy enemies over and over to get to the hard bits could become tedious.

Enjoying it though. The combat system is interesting. I have learned that dodging is better than blocking – at least with my character (as low as you get Wanderer).

    #47 3 years ago
  48. KL

@46 why exactly did you find it great? He didn’t even knew how to lock on enemies to score a hit.No wonder some people find it sooo hard

I’ll buy this when it’s $20 thank you.
