UK charts: Portal 2 takes top spot from Zumba

Chart Track’s confirmed this morning that Portal 2 has taken over from Zumba Fitness at the number one spot in the UK charts.

The release of the puzzler did better than the release of the original, which came packaged with The Orange Box that charted at number three in 2007.

CVG‘s reporting from Chart-Track numbers that the 360 version outsold the PS3 version, with 54 percent of units sold on the former to the latter’s 35 percent despite its compatibility features with Steam. Not including Steam sales, the PC boxed SKU accounted for ten percent of sales.

Mortal Kombat also did well in securing second spot, whilst Black Ops jumped to third thanks to price promotions. Zumba went down to fourth whilst Lego Star Wars III finishes the top five.

Here’s the full top ten for the week ending April 23. Last week’s data is here.

  1. Portal 2
  2. Mortal Kombat
  3. Call of Duty: Black Ops
  4. Zumba Fitness
  5. Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars
  6. Operation Flashpoint: Red River
  7. FIFA 11
  8. Crysis 2
  9. Wii Fit Plus
  10. Homefront

Which version of Portal 2 sold the bestest?

Homefront still on the top 10, there is no justice. :(

Who knows which is “best”, but it’ll be interesting to see if the PC code included with the PS3 version thing impacts sales at all. I myself got the PS3 version for that very reason, intending to play it on PC mostly.

(For context, I own the first Portal on PC and 360, and for multiplatform console games tend to lean towards the 360 more than the PS3 purely because I find the controller more comfortable and like having 1080p on every game.)

That said, it’ll be pretty difficult to glean any sense from the numbers, with Valve’s mystical Steam sales hidden away behind smoke and mirrors.

According to CVG, the 360 version (54%) outsold the PS3 version (34%) in the UK.

Mortal Kombat appears to have been the PS3er’s game of choice last week – that did better on PS3 than 360, and both versions did better than PS3 Portal 2.

So much for that ‘PS3 gamers are more refined than 360 shooty-shooty-bang-box gamers’ bullshit, then. :-D

hmm maybe PSN getting screwed had something to do with it, but I think it’s more of the xbox live voice chat that sealed the deal… can’t play coop without voice chat you’ll want to murder someone

@dtyk

That’s a good point. I struggle to accept that people wouldn’t buy the PS3 game just because PSN is down for a few days. The voice chat thing sounds more sound.

That’s disappointing – I think it’s a good title just in terms of the SP – and I really just bought it for the MP. Exactly what I wanted from a tactical shooter personally. I’ve found the SP Campaign to be a lot better than reviews suggested. It should also do better in the US where the series traditionally sells a lot better.

I’m guessing the SP will be getting much more of a work-out than usual thanks to PSNageddon, so it’s probably a good job it’s sound.

Looking at the charts, I notice there are no 3DS games in the top 40 already. Trouble ahead?

@11 since when can’t you do voice chat on PS3? I know you can’t do cross game chat but if you’re both playing the same game, you can.

@21

So two people on two consoles playing Portal 2 can chat through PSN?

@22, PSN has no cross-game chat a-la 360, but it still has game-chat, so yes 2 people playing Portal 2 can talk to each other if they so wish.

I thought this was relatively common knowledge now, or have the xbox faithful muddied the truth with their bullshit chinese whispers?

@23

Just so I’m clear: cross-game chat is, say, one person on one 360 playing Portal can chat to one person on a different 360 playing, say, Portal 2?

So on the PS3, one person on one PS3 playing Portal 2 can chat to a different person on a different PS3 playing Portal 2…and so can do the Co-op?

@24, yes.

Game chat is usually a part of the game rather than a PSN or XBL feature. A lot of XBL players choose private or Party chat so they don’t have to listen to randoms on their team, it’s not necessary for voice comms though.

Got ya. Guess 360 players simply like Portal more than PS3 players then.
