SEGA has said its working on a game to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Sonic, and it’s called Sonic Anniversary.

The announcement is being attributed to SEGA marketing director Izaskun Urretabizkaia speaking at Gamefest 2010, , the game is chock full of level remakes from two decades worth of the blue one’s games and includes a mix of both 2D and 3D environments.

Each level, comprised of some of the best ones in the series, will be receive an update, and will launch on DS, PSP, PS3, and Wii.

A release on PC and Xbox 360 has yet to be confirmed, but a 360 version will be likely.

SEGA has yet to make an official comment on the matter, thus the rumor tag in the post title. SEGA Spain has officially released a “no comment” statement to Spong.

We’ll send a mail to the US office, then.

Thanks, D’toid (via Sonic Paradise).

This is a great idea actually, now that they have next gen engines for 3D and 2D levels. it’s a nice homage, that Mario is getting too.

played the Sonic 4 only for 15sec and instantly deleted it!

This is not a new game! Same game I played YEARS ago but in better graphics. Why the hell should I waste my money on that!?

we want a reboot or redefinition.

Isn’t “same game I played YEARS ago but in better graphics” exactly what people have been begging for for years?

no…what older gamers have been begging!

fans are begging for a Adventure 3 type.

But Sega are giving trash versions.

Sonic is dead anyway, I don’t know why people have hope for the guy:/
