Blizzard wants “right partners” for a StarCraft movie, says James Cameron would fit the bill

Tuesday, 31st August 2010 04:01 GMT By Nathan Grayson

“Yes, Mr. Cameron? If you’re not too busy back-stroking in your private water park wave pool filled with half the world’s money, we’ve got someone on the line who might be able to help you scoop up the other half.”

Speaking with MTV Multiplayer, Blizzard EVP of game design Rob Pardo was all for a StarCraft movie – but on one condition: the “right partners” need to come out of the woodwork first.

“We’ve always had an interest in seeing our stuff on film or TV. It’s just tricky to find the right partners. We probably could have made a ['StarCraft'] movie or something on TV years and years ago, but it’s really important to us that we find creative people that are really talented but also really excited about our properties. That’s always been the challenge for us. I think if [James] Cameron came to us tomorrow and said, ‘You want to make a ‘StarCraft’ movie?’ we’d probably sign that,” he explained.

According to Pardo, the stars aligned in just such a way for the Warcraft movie, which is why it’s now more than just a twinkle in Blizzard’s eye.

“That’s why we did the ‘WoW’ movie. We were really excited about being involved with Legendary Pictures, who we thought had a really good track record with these sorts of movies that would make sense for our franchises,” he said, also noting that the Warcraft movie’s still in the “story-development” phase.

Perhaps the writers need someone breathing down their neck, constantly reminding them to CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS WORDS to speed up the process. It definitely helps us, and is totally not irritating to the point that we advise Blizzard to beef up security at BlizzCon to at least make things interesting for us.

Oh fucking please. If Cameron is going to be tapped for a game film, it should be something character driven like Mass Effect, not some BS RTS like Starcraft. Blizzard needs to turn down their ego a bit. Besides, Cameron will be doing Avatar films for the next decade, so unless Blizzard is hoping for a June 2021 release, they had better move on.

Besides, they did a great job on that Trailer for the
Lich King, why not just do a CGI film in house. Hell, why don’t all these damned studios just do CGI films in house. Valve has the right idea. Do it yourself and keep it coming correct.

How did Squaresoft’s in-house CGI movie work out for them?

    (Spirits Within, Not Advent Children)

@2 Advent Children was a great success for them. The DVD sold 3 to 4 millions units, or even more, as far as I know.

    @ 1

Because James Camerons Movies are always so character driven?

    #4 4 years ago
  5. DarkElfa

@2 Badly, because it was done by the Japanese who’s films fly over the heads of 95% of all Americans. I’m American, I know.

@4 No, because your mom is character driven, ass and yes most of his films are very character driven.

There’s enough character in StarCraft to make an interesting movie. Aliens meets Avatar would be verry nice to see.

AC was just FF7 fan service. Commercially a succes but artiscly a dissaster.

James Cameron SUCKS. His Avatar sucked, but… i can’t wait for his next movie: Battle Angel Alita in 2011 by Yukito Kishiro and James Cameron. He is a writer, director, producer and editor and if his film will be successfull (Money) than he will make 3 parts of it.
Thats the only movie that can save his reputation from the Avatar disaster among critics.

He won’t make Avatar in the near future, so you can just shut the fuck up about that boring shit.

As for the Blizzard Starcraft II game it must be a CGI movie only (DarkElfa is right about it absolutely, like Valve said previously that they are going to make film) and someone saying about “something character driven like Mass Effect” need to shut up again because you can go watch Star Trek, Babylon 5 and BattleStar Galactica and your soul will be happy because basically Mass Effect is a Rip Off from these masterpieces.

@7 Cameron recently said that he would make Avatar 2 before he made Battle Angel because he came up with a story for Avatar 2 that he finds interesting. So, you STFU if you are gonna have a mindless rant without even getting your facts right.

  9. Erthazus

@8 Go and FUCK yourself idiot. You can’t make Avatar so fast.
He said that he will make Avatar 2, but he never said BEFORE Battle Angel. + he is already a producer on the Sanctum.

So fuck yourself. You are the one who don’t know shit. Battle Angel is in production since 2008 and it will be ready at 2011

“If Cameron is going to be tapped for a game film, it should be something character driven like Mass Effect” I agree.

“James Cameron SUCKS. His Avatar sucked” No! U suck! :D

  11. Erthazus

    @10 you liked Avatar?

I was a little bit angry on him on the last movie. Movies like Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, Strange days are masterpieces. o doubt about it.
But Avatar? Please. Someone who will say it was epic must go and read The brothers Arkady and watch Pocahontas for fuck sake. Avatar had 0 original ideas and was just for children or for ladies that likes Drama!

    #11 4 years ago
  12. DarkElfa

Well, regardless of whether or not he does the Avatar sequels before or after Alita or if they suck, he’ll definitely be doing those 3 next so like I said, 2021.

So Erthazus, did Avatar not have enough bewbs or enough Kirk?

    #12 4 years ago
  13. Erthazus

@12 Avatar was just BORING and had 0 original ideas and there were enough bewbs and stupid action (With the last magical animal attack or something, don’t remember and don’t care much about it anyway)…

So for me after masterpieces like Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, Strange days there is hope that Battle Angel Alita will be effin great. I still think he can make really great movies. Besides, Story and everything else is already written by Yukito Kishiro and James Cameron just need to direct film right.

If cameron does make this movie then please let it be good like like terminator and aliens….not that avatar BS >_>

srsly its probably the most overrated movie of recent years

    #14 4 years ago
  15. Erthazus

    @14 It’s not probably. It’s a fact.

  16. LePlatypus

Remember people Erthazus’ opinion is everyones! He dictates what you think like Hitler back in Nazi Germany.

    #16 4 years ago
  17. Erthazus

@16 Oh thank you very much for calling me a Hitler you fucking idiot. Thank you very much. If you disagree with me, than OK, it’s your opinion.
I said that “it is a fact” because a lot of decent critic feel the same. Movie is overrated and almost all ideas are taken from other masterpieces and thats a real fact and because of that, movie is overrated and very cliche.

Maybe you are a fan of Twilight, saw Avatar and thought: OMG, this is a masterpiece!
Than of course it’s the best movie EvAr created in the history of mankind.

    #17 4 years ago
  18. LePlatypus

@17 It appears that you think people either think Avatar “is shit” or “the greatest movie evar” in no way did i say it was the greatest film evar. You seem to try and dictate the comment section and criticise people due to their opinions. I remember a few days ago when I didn’t see any of your comments, oh that was so good not seeing your dictating drivel. I love the way how you feel in such a way about a film that you feel it’s necessary to come on to a website and make lots of hate comments and calling other people idiots because they feel a different way towards something than you did. Who does that remind me of? Oh yeah, an Austrian man in power of Germany from 1934-1945.

Avatar was definitely the worst movie I’ve seen since the mid-90′s.

James Cameron tells stories like he’s talking to abject retards. Once you start selling your movies on “It’s 3D!” or “It’s the most expensive ever!” you just know you’ve got nothing left to offer as a director.

  20. Callum

If ‘shit’ films make as much money as Avatar did, then I would like to announce my new film. It’s called watching Callum work. It’s an epic tail of woe and work. $50 million plx!!

Erthazus you continue to cement the fact that you are a moron into peoples brains. Please continue, less I forget how stuborn and ignorant you are and actually grow to like you!

    #20 4 years ago

@3: The movie lost a lot of money afaik. Which is why there’s been no sequel yet.
