EA announces Mass Effect 2 for PS3

masseffect2firearms

EA has just announced Mass Effect 2 for PS3.

Did you fall out of your chair with the news or where you expecting it?

We fell out of our chair, but for different reasons.

Anyway, the long-rumored and long-wished for PS3 version of our favorite space opera is coming in January 2011.

Those expecting this might pave the way for Mass Effect 1 should just stop hoping, though.

An EA representative has told IGN there are “no plans” to first the first Mass Effect game to PS3. No reason was given, but more likely than not it has to do with the fact Microsoft was the publisher for it in 2007.

Still, Mass Effect 2 for the Sony crowd.

Watch the announcement below.

Really wish Mass Effect 1 was coming as well.

I’m sure they could fit both games on one blu-ray.

Doesn’t really make much sense without Mass 1. My playthrough wouldn’t have been nearly as personal without my Mass 1 save.

Half-awesome news for PS3 owners, it’s just a shame they don’t get the first one too. I wonder if they’ll do a big ‘previously on’ DVD or something to bring you up to speed with the story so far, like they did with Xenosaga on PS2?

Taking a long time to get here too – remnants of a ‘deal’ that has to be played out? The 360 version’s already hit £12 in some shops, so full price next year isn’t going to look too appetising… unless they’re planning on doing a ‘game of the year’ version for both platforms with all the DLC included and stuff.

This is awesome news for PS3 owners indeed!

@theevilaires but the ps3 didn’t get the first game so your fucked storywise from the get go, and without being able to carry shepard over you wouldn’t have made those important decisions in the past to effect the second game. That is just dissapointing.

    #12 4 years ago
  13. Blerk

The frame-rate issues were sorted out for ME2, weren’t they? It was only ME1 that had the super-wonky engine.

    #13 4 years ago
  14. Blerk

Aaaaaaaaanyway, are you really going to play ME2 on PS3 without playing the first one, TEA? When you have the option to play both because you have both machines? That’s just mental.

Having Mass Effect 2 is better than having no Mass Effect at all.

Part 3 would really make no sense if you haven’t even played the second one.

    KABOOM!!!

PLEASE EA, show us the power of blu-ray and add ME1 on this special PS3 edition!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    #20 4 years ago
  21. Blerk

Get away, Erthazus. The menus and stuff were better on the PC version of the original, for sure, but otherwise it’s absolutely fine. Just because you’re rubbish with a pad doesn’t mean we all are. :-D

    #21 4 years ago
  22. DJ Deathstar

@ Blerk, your correct Mass Effect 2 doesn’t even have frame rate problems on 360 it was only the first one that occasionally stuttered

@9 Why would you want Move support in ME2 it would only allow you to not control the game as well

  23. theevilaires

I’m so happy right now I might actually start crying. Quick someone take my wallet before I go on a shopping spree and lose my mind. I’m going back and getting every last one of you guys comments who laughed and mocked me and said this day would not come! Until then enjoy the thought of me dancing my happy ass around my PC…..

Well, if I’m not mistaken, Mass Effect 1 needs authorization from Microsoft. Besides, it is impossible to fit both on one Blu-Ray, because both use compression. Since none of the PS3 games use — and Blu-Ray compression is expensive and the loading would be longer — a compilation would need 70 GB, or more.

It’s too bad for PS3 owners, but at least they can play an excellent game that, so far, it is my GOTY.

    #24 4 years ago
  25. Erthazus

@Blerk, it’s not just a precision. It’s the same thing like playing slashers or fighting games on the keyboard. It’s possible, but it’s just lame and not enjoyable without the gamepad.

    #25 4 years ago
  26. threadzilla

    wow

    #26 4 years ago
  27. Blerk

Just because you prefer mouse and keyboard doesn’t make a game pointless on other platforms, Erthazus. I had no trouble whatsoever with precision in Mass Effect, it’s not a game about headshots.

    #27 4 years ago
  28. Dr.Ghettoblaster

    @24.
You can fit at LEAST 5 8.5GB DVD’s on 1 blu-ray. I don’t know how many DVDs ME1 and ME2 are, but if it’s less than 5 total, seems pretty logical to me.

    #28 4 years ago
  29. Redh3lix

Know absolutely nothing about the game, but I wouldn’t have thought Metal Gear Solid made any sense to those new to the series on XBox 360??

Either way, I suspect the developers aren’t stupid enough to introduce PS3 owners to this game without making the storyline accomodate new players to the series.

“Mass Effect 2 will make no sense to PS3 gamers”

  31. cookiejar

“Coming in January of 2011 in beautiful Blu-ray, Mass Effect 2 PS3 will feature hours of bonus content making it the perfect entry point to the franchise”

From that, I reckon the bonus content could be a short film, or re-cap of the previous story, to get you into ME2, without actually playing the game.

    #31 4 years ago
  32. Petulant Radish

@TEA if you’re that happy about it why didn’t you just play it on the 360, surely you have one? You can get it now for pretty damn cheap…

    #32 4 years ago
  33. Blerk

@28, three discs in total (one for the first, two for the second) so it’d easily fit on a Blu-Ray. The “compression” stuff is just nonsense, I can’t believe for a second that PS3 games don’t have anything compressed on the disc.

    #33 4 years ago
  34. Erthazus

@Blerk, it’s not just a precision. It’s the same thing like playing slashers or fighting games on the keyboard. It’s possible, but it’s just lame and not enjoyable without the gamepad. :)

I actually played 1 for about 7 hours and put it back in the box.
Loading times were worse than terminator salvation (or whatever its called).

I should try it again as I have heard only good things about it.

    #35 4 years ago
  36. DSB

I don’t see why you’d need Mass Effect to get any kind of continuity. Mass Effect 2 made no fucking sense, and beyond the few old characters you run into, it really wasn’t much of a sequel.

It was said when the original Mass Effect went to PC, that it was a real improvement. I think they changed a few things in the interval?

    #36 4 years ago
  37. Nozz

Apparently you get to “fake” your backstory at the start of ME2 if you dont carry over a save, maybe they will just elaborate on the story a bit more for the PS3 version.

On whatever day in January 2011 I will be strolling down the isles to the gaming section of my local Best Buy,Target,Wal-Mart,or whatever game store (except Gamestop) doing the cabbage patch dance to this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKSxlJPmz40 while the clerk scans my copy of MASS EFFECT for the PS3! :D

I DEMAND A MIDNIGHT RELEASE! PEW! PEW! FU**** PEW!

    #39 4 years ago
  40. Roberto Guedes

@28 Yeah, that’s true. But, as I said, any game on a DVD (on 360 or PC) uses compression. If I’m not mistaken, the technology used on Mass Effect 1 reduces 5 GB to 1 GB.

Since Blu-Ray doesn’t use compression, ME1 would be 35 GB. Mass Effect 2 is on 2 DVDs. But it does fit on a Blu-Ray, so no more then 50 GB, without compression.

And there is the publishing deal of Microsoft and BioWare (independent at the time of ME1 release).

Im sure they will announce a limited addition that comes with Mass Effect 1 and 2 on the same disc with all the DLC.

    #43 4 years ago
  44. Dr.Ghettoblaster

I’m just saying from a MARKETING standpoint, EA would be VERY smart to put ME1 on the same blu-ray (if possible) to increase purchase incentive as “SPECIAL PS3 EDITION”.

    #44 4 years ago
  45. spiderLAW

    @40
Yes Blu-Ray indeed uses compression man. All multiplatforms are compressed onto the Blu ray usually only taking 7gb of the dic space.
First Party however doesnt always use compression (Uncharted 2, God of War 3, Killzone 2) or at least to the extreme levels like the multiplatforms.

    #45 4 years ago
  46. KrazyKraut

omfg…kids plz. The only thing you really saw on FF13 PS3 version were the movies…but the textures looked the same. I am not sure if the graphic will be better and compression here and there..it doesnt matter.

    #46 4 years ago
  47. Blerk

Neither DVD nor Blu-Ray compress data for you automagically. The data is compressed before it’s put on the disc, so there’s absolutely nothing to prevent you from using exactly the same compressed data on a 360 DVD as you do on a PS3 Blu-Ray. I think you’ve got the wrong end of the stick there.

    #47 4 years ago
  48. No_PUDding

To be honest, it makes NO sense they aren’t doing Mass Effect 1.

MS doesn’t own the IP, so there must be some pretty interesting loopholes in contracts keeping EA from doing this, OR they are just really really idiotic.

All on one disc, both games would be superb. Even as shoddy ports, I wouldn’t mind having a go.

    #48 4 years ago
  49. Erthazus

@46 The difference between the PS3 version and Xbox 360 were not textures my boy, the difference was between resolution and thats an important part.

i love how people say without the first one it will make no sense, it will cause they give that “last time on mass effect” thing as if it was a tv show. and thats what i got my information of the first mass effect and mass effect 2 made perfect sense. The story is not that hard to follow along.

    #52 4 years ago
  53. robmlufc

GOW 3 would make no sense on the 360 without the first two, because the console would just start smoking and implode just trying to load up the intro.

    #53 4 years ago
  54. The Hindle

I think that Me genisis thing that Gaf mentioned is the first ME, would be a way they could get it on to the Ps3.

    #54 4 years ago
  55. Roberto Guedes

So, they use compression… But I think that only when it is necessary. They could do this on Mass Effect 1 (let’s forget about the Microsoft deal on this discussion), but the loading wouldn’t be way longer? Specially with the Unreal Engine 3 problems?

    #55 4 years ago

  63. zoopdeloop

@54 and maybe it will be the announcement he mentioned there might be in a few weeks through magazines

As for ME1 i know a lot of people who didn’t actually finished it(they found it annoying from loading times to glitches and bugs) but they played through ME2 till the end.
EA could easily find a way to wrap things up story wise starting with ME2 on the ps3.

Off course it would be best if they included both games but i don’t think this is as easy as it sounds.

The good news are that a much wider audience will experience a great game alongside with it’s upcoming sequel…so some people should stop ruining it.

I am going to sell my copy of the 360 version to get the PS3 version. I still play it on 360 but i prefer trophies to achievements and i like the PS3 controller better. I also like that the PS3 is quiter too. just my opinions though. Its a great game no matter what console you play it on.

When Insomniac went multi-plat I recall some vocal 360 fans berating PS3 fans for expressing less-than-gracious remarks to the new members of the audience. It’s reassuring to see that this behaviour isn’t quite as one-sided as some people try to make out.

Sadly (and shamefully), I’ve yet to find myself enjoy a BioWare RPG. Something just doesn’t click for me. I’m not disputing that they’re a stand-out developer though.

    #68 4 years ago
  69. theevilaires

Oh no spiderLAW, I’ve waited too long for this game to come to PS3. Im going to sit there and enjoy every second of this games part by part day by day for however long I can stretch this orgasmic gaming miracle. I’ll be sitting in my man cave surrounded by 7.1 sound and a brand new 46″ Bravia XBR9 directly in front of me loving every moment of this game.

I’m treating this like the birth of a child moment where every sec must be realized in pure enjoyment and happiness and the sweet sound of those trophies will be the cherry on top.

This is my vengeance day for M$ fucking up FFXIII for me and every other FF die hard fan. Mass Effect 2 on PS3 is our REDEMPTION! So take your time and stretch it out as long as possible because the wait for Mass Effect 3 is shorter than the 360 people who have been waiting for the next.

2006 is well behind us! Welcome to 2010-2011 :D

Personally I prefer ME1, and it’s a shame, it won’t be out for PS3, but with that said.. ME2 isn’t a bad game itself, on the contrary, it managed to improve most things from the original, so I guess it’s win/win for those, who don’t know what they’re missing – especially if BioWare manage to re-tell the story in a decent way.

    #71 4 years ago
  72. Gamewizard71

ok the only reason it would be better on PS3 is because they have had more time to develope it for PS3… Mass Effect 1 will never EVER come to PS3 because microsoft published it so stop asking… also there is no way to fit both those games on 1 disc… its a game… ok stop treating it like the coming of jesus christ!

    @71

Glad to know i’m not the only one!

Despite Mass Effect 2′s improvements to accessibility, shooting and engine I believe the first to be the better game.

For starters the story is much better. 2′s story was 85% team building; although the individual character missions were interesting they rarely served towards the greater story arch. It felt almost like an anthology, consisting of several smaller stories rather than a large narrative. Mass Effect had a much more cohesive, consistent plot.

Then there’s Bioware’s decision to completely remove enjoyable (for me at least) RPG stalwarts like loot collection, inventory building, weapon/armour management. I appreciate the need to streamline things, but it was detrimental for me.

Finally I absolutely HATED the mining interface. Why on earth was it necessary to completely gut the MAKO instead of improving what was wrong (aiming)?! Not alone did they remove the mako, they replaced it with a slow, laborious, needlessly taxing (why on earth do you have to hold a button to scan?!) mini game.

Oh and ship fuel?… Was there really a need to manage fuel supplies?

Errrgh… Too much moaning. I REALLY enjoyed Mass Effect 2, I just enjoyed Mass Effect a hell of a lot more!

Lol awesome news! not that im 100% sure ill buy, but its another blow to xbox fanboys, and the xbox console as a whole. ps3, even after the yr headstart, is the better console by far, and now it gets ME2 AND ME3 later on, 2 titles which are supposed to help out xbox in its battle against ps3 , are now on ps3!! :) seriously, and look at the future, xbox 360 has around 8 exclusives planned, ps3 has around 22-25. Mass effect, welcome to the ps3!! i guess when uncharted 3 comes out, what will xbox have as its rival? nothing lolll
