EA’s announced Dead Space: Ignition, a prequel to Dead Space 2, for a fall release on PSN and Xbox Live Marketplace.

This was the announcement hinted at by Visceral Games earlier yesterday.

The title is one of many “game extensions” planned before the release of Dead Space 2 next January.

Ignition, according to the press release, “combines an interactive comic-style story with three unique hacking mini games; Hardware Crack, Trace Route and System Override.”

“Dead Space Ignition is the first of many exciting game extensions we have planned for the launch of Dead Space 2,” said Dead Space franchise executive producer Steve Papoutsis.

Press release is below.

Dead Space 2 releases for PS3, 360 and PC on January 28 in the UK. The game’s limited edition is a PS3 exclusive, and features the Move-supported Dead Space: Extraction.

“Dead Space Ignition is the first of many exciting game extensions we have planned for the launch of Dead Space 2,” said Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer on Dead Space franchise. “The interactive comic-style game will give Dead Space fans a unique perspective on the events leading up to Dead Space 2, but will also introduce the storyline to a brand-new audience of gamers.”

    I doubt it’ll be free. My guess is $3 to $5 bucks (240-400 MS Points). Anything above that will be ridiculous. The only thing that interests me is the free suit.

    A prequel to Dead Space would be….. Dead Space 1? Am I wrong?

    @5: yes. ;)

    @3: My thoughts too. Most certainly not for free and it’s just another marketing hype. Give a few people a few weeks to develop a tiny pre-game, extra hype and extra cash.

    That… doesn’t sound very promising. Reminds me a bit of what Lionhead did for Fable 2 with the ‘Pub Games’ thing.

    Sooo…everyone on the Sprawl’s gonna be dead before Isaac shows up? Pity, I was looking forward to playing a game where the outbreak happens around you and the place goes from very populated to sparsely populated, the numbers of survivors dwindling as you play.

    One of these days a survival horror game has to try that…Resident Evil 5 kinda did, but it still didn’t feel like a totally normal place when the game started (villagers kicking a human-sized bag as they glared at you, for instance).
