Alan Wake reviews start to awaken – round up

Wednesday, 5th May 2010 07:25 GMT By Johnny Cullen

It’s happening: no more delays for Alan Wake. It’s definitely coming next week for Europeans, which is why the online embargo has just lifted.

Opinion on it so far seems to be go out and buy it when it does launch. Or place your pre-order down as soon as humanly possible.

Get rounded-up below

The only tiny blip on Remedy’s radar was the seven given by Eurogamer. Everything else since has been great scores as of the time of writing.

Round-up is below.

If you have any reviews to add, add them below in comments.

Alan Wake releases next Friday in Europe and May 18 in the US for Xbox 360.

  1. Mike

I’ll get it next week. Sounds right down street.

Swedish magasine Gamereactor has posted their review here:

    Score: 7/10 (second opinion 8/10)
Use Google translate if your Swedish is a bit rusty. ;)
It actually does a half-decent job.

I thought they would be straight AAA’s…
The 7/10 from Eurogamer is quite disturbing….( one of the best sites imo ). Hope they got it wrong.

I’m just going to pick out the reviews that reinforce my preconceptions and ignore everything else.

  6. Hunam

EG gave Dead Space a 7 which was criminally low and Alone in the Dark a 7 which was 6 points higher than it deserved. I’m not saying they get it wrong, but horror games can hit people very differently and their scores for them are usually broad. Some sites gave Silent HIll 2 6′s and 7′s back when that came out, and now it’s recognised as the best survival horror game made by most of the gaming press.

Basically, it can be a contentious subject these horror games.

  7. Razor

Well, they’re good enough to make me pick it up along with a 360 later down the road. Been interested in this game for a long time.

Reviews are somebody’s opinion, so if somebody gives the game a low score it shouldn’t mean anything..7-10 is a good score, most of us or the general public enjoy games that are rated 7 and up. I will pick up Alan Wake, cause the game seems interesting enough.

    #9 5 years ago
  10. Tallon 4

I’m not saying that I would not be getting this….but the reviews are not that great. Sure…they are a personal opinion, but when the feared metacritic average is not that good, I assume the game isn’t as great as I thought it would be.

But let’s wait and see…there aren’t many reviews up

  11. Robo_1

Ellie also gave the rather awesome R&C: A Crack In Time a 7/10, which I sharply disagreed with, so in all honesty, I don’t put much stock in her opinion.

  12. onlineatron

The repetition is what I was mostly worried about. Seeing as the Eurogamer review seems to think that’s an issue, I may wait for a price drop instead of snagging the game day one as I had planned.

(That or find a trade-in deal at Game)

    I’m looking forward to it.
This will rock. It’s Remedy, they know how to do it right.

    Alan Wake.
    - 540p subHD resolution causing heavy bluriness and lots of jaggies
    - Heavy game breaking screen tearing
    - Story mode lasts 6 hours at best
    - Lots of boring and annoying vehicle sections like in Alone in the Dark
    - Only 3 types of enemies
    - Only 4 types of weapons

    Unbiased score: 6.8/10

If you love Alone In The Dark… cough…. You’ll love every repetetive moment of this Alan Wake 360 owners.

Since when did the number of available weapons affect the final score of a game? :-D

You try too hard. In your rush to blurt drivel onto the screen you tore your skin suit and your natural trollish green is showing through.

That just helps symbolizes or reinforces the score givin.
Anywho im sure you’ll love all 6 hours with firing your pistol the first 2 hours, then your shotgun the next 2 hours then torching folks to death with your lethal torch for the last 2 hours. YAY funfun! :D

    #22 5 years ago

Yeah, maybe I should just throw my 360 in the bin!!

Then I could buy another PS3 just so that I don’t have to feel ashamed that this game that I’ve never had any intention of buying is coming out!!

Completely off topic, but I actually prefer to have fewer weapons in a game. When you have dozens of the damn things I always think I’m using the wrong one. I played through the whole of Dead Space with only the default plasma cutter that you get at the start.

You have a valid point dead space was great with just using the plasma cutter, but then could you say the same for borderlands? Or Halo.. running around the entire game with just a pistol? Nah

Borderlands had a gazillion weapons but actually very few weapon types. I played pretty much the whole game with just varieties of the same four, favouring the shotgun over everything else.

Gamekult is often extremely harsh and picky in their reviews, so it’s a good sign that they gave the game an 8, with the ‘Very Good’ tag. They do say the gameplay mechanics feel outdated, but the game’s overall mood, writing and story more than make up for it.

is this “fanboy” thing going to get worse as consoles continue to evolve in the future? i’m dreading what the next generation is going to be like. every forum/game community i read has these arguments about trolls, fanboys, systems being inferior, graphics are poo poo and so on, it can make awful reading at times.

i feel bad for people starting out playing games/taking a interest, if they read some of stuff posted they wouldnt know what to think !

    #38 5 years ago
  39. Blerk

I don’t think it’s any worse now than it was back at the dawn of gaming. The only difference these days is that the playground’s bigger and the stuff you shout gets heard by anyone who passes, even if it’s days later.

Yeah because a small town in the Pacific Northwest should be laden with assault rifles, sniper rifles, rocket launchers, plasma rifles, light machine guns, plasma swords, brute hammers, needlers etc

    #41 5 years ago
  42. Moonwalker1982

    @ 6

Did they give Alone in the dark the same as Dead space? There goes their credibility right there, that’s beyond pathetic, oh my.

And here we go again about game lengths, first it was said it was 10-16 hours and now someone claims it’s only 6. Right. The same happened with Splinter Cell:Conviction, but i don’t have it, cause i’m playing on realistic, so it lasts much longer than just 5-6 hours.

And as always, i won’t let reviews decide for me whether to buy/not buy a game.

    #42 5 years ago
  43. Gheritt White

@ 39: Oh come now – this gen has seen the worst fanboy wars since the days of the SNES and Mega Drive. It’s always worse when you don’t have a clear pack-leader for the core category.

    #43 5 years ago
  44. daytripper

heres a question, what path or life experience has been so changing it makes you a “fanboy”. i would hate to be like that, especially after reading the eurogamer comment section “ha ha you xbots” “bitch shouldnt be playing games” bla bla, fucking looneys the lot of them.

    #44 5 years ago
  45. Blerk

Possibly. It all comes down to insecurity in your own choices at the end of the day, regardless. Until people learn to choose a machine and be happy with what they’ve picked, things will never get better.

    #45 5 years ago
  46. The Hindle

A 7 from Eurogamer usually means its a 9 imo Dead Space and Infamous come to mind.

    #46 5 years ago
  47. Gheritt White

@ 44: Most fanboys don’t even realise they are one, though. They genuinely either can’t or can’t be bothered to put themselves in somebody else’s shoes and try to see things from a different angle.

    #47 5 years ago
  48. manamana

Jepp, and since when does a “Techsystem” define how good a game actually is?
I ever have bought and will buy every system wich runs a game, wich suits me.
How could i care for labels?

Think of that … it’s not(!) the system. It’s the game you play.

    #48 5 years ago
  49. daytripper

@45 i’m just tired of reading it all, its all i see these days, i enjoy good convo and it only takes one tit to make a comment and then people will start to bite, annoying. as for the review, its her opinion, i respect that. shes doing a job i would love so good luck to her i say.

@46 i slagged infamous off the other day, called it boring, decided to give it another go, really enjoying it now :D

@57 … like building proper game that has nothing to do with AITD?
@58 … that was just a really good laugh. Damned should i be. But that one got me.

    #59 5 years ago
  60. Erthazus

@59 for these years you can make a masterpiece.
It really looks like an Alone In the Dark on Steroids. Shooting – cars – bad plot
There are certainly interesting moments with earthquakes and monsters and e.t.c. but thats… =\

    #60 5 years ago
  61. manamana

@60 … right. Maybe it’s not a so called AAA-masterpiece. So what? It wasn’t supposed to be the systemshifter anyways imo. See, i’m enyoing games for, hmm, let me guess, 35years now. And to me it sounds thrilling and fascinating and i can’t wait to get my hands on da not-AAA-shiet!

    #61 5 years ago
  62. Moonwalker1982

I see Alan Wake as a survival horror game, with probably not incredibly much action but more exploring.Enough scares, and one hell of a atmosphere. And i actually apreciate a very good atmosphere alot…ALOT!

Maybe for the people who have been hyping this one up like crazy, are dissapointed now, but i wasn’t one of them. I am just looking forward to playing it.

But i said it once, and i’ll do it again. A site that gives Dead Space the same rating as Alone in the dark is laughable, really, it is. Alone in the dark had its moments of fun but was overshadowed by waaaaay too many mediocre and at times annoying moments and BUGS! Dead Space? One hell of a game, up there with the Resident Evils, sigh. INfamous, awesome game, great story and fun as hell, but hey…that’s just me right?

    #62 5 years ago
  63. daytripper

@61 yeah am the same, not once have i thought “goty” as i’ve said the eurogamer review is getting a lot more attention for many reasons whilst the other reviews in the main seem to suggest its a excellent purchase so i’m a bit puzzled by it all, reminds me of the heavy rain review saga.

think i’ll stay away from neogaf for a while aswell.

    #63 5 years ago
  64. Erthazus

@62 Absolutely agree with you on that.

@61 Actually it’s a AAA title from the creators of Max Payne. In Eastern Countries and Russia thats just a shit ton of hype around it.

    #64 5 years ago
  65. manamana

@64 Oh the hype. Like Heavy-Rain-hype? Or MGS? Or (4 God’s sake) Halo? C’mon it will still be a really good game if it get’s niners ‘n tenners elsewhere …

oh snap, a 7 from EG lol. hmm.. so turns out it is actually just an Alan in the Dark.

and @6 Hunam – who gave SH2 a 6 when it came out, some obscure start up site? oh, and for the record no it isn’t ‘recognized as the best in the genre by the gaming press’. if anything, the original is often used as an example of survival horror’s pinnacle. my favourite game =/= best game ever :?
