BioWare: Mass Effect 2 saves might not work with Mass Effect 3

Mass Effect series project director Casey Hudson has revealed that your Mass Effect 2 save may not work in Mass Effect 3.

More below, but be warned: there might be some spoilerfics.

If you finish the second game with Shepard trading in life for victory, you’re going to have to start afresh in the third game.

“Dead is dead. Mass Effect 3, as with the rest of the trilogy, is Shepard’s story. If you have a dead Shepard at the end of Mass Effect 2, that saved game won’t import into Mass Effect 3,” he said.

“You can play Mass Effect 3 if you died in Mass Effect 2 of course, but you’ll have to create a new Shepard. Harsh? Yes. But we wouldn’t be serious about the concept of a suicide mission if you couldn’t die and your death didn’t have serious consequences.”

Mass Effect 2 was released at the end of January to critical acclaim, with over 2 million units sold in the first couple of days on sale in the US and a number one position in the UK for two weeks running.

Mass Effect 3 is currently in pre-development, and will be released in this hardware cycles, according to comments made by Hudson previously.

I was worried… then I read the text and thought “duh”. :D

They won’t allow you to buy Mass Effect 3 if this happens. There’ll be a man at the shop checking saves. :-D

You mean I can’t play as a Zombie Shepard in ME3? Time for a boycott!!!

  4. Blerk said:

Actually it’ll be really interesting to see how they could get around that for the third bit. A clone? Parallel-universe? Time travellers nip back to save the day?

Edit: come to think of it, they could use one of those and NOT force you to start again.

If ME2 is anything to go by you’re really going to want to import a valid save, otherwise you’ll be lumbered with the worst default choices you could possibly imagine.

Didn’t even know you could let Shepard die at the end of ME2. Has anyone had this and would he care to elaborate on the story when you do that?

Only if you rush the game can this happen dude

  8. Psychotext said:

Massively rush it. You need to have ignored the upgrades and loyalty stuff.

I think they already confirmed that you’d return as a clone if your Shepard died at the end.

Did you not read the article you save goes no where you can’t import with that save. SO when you press NEw game you will play as the default which stated previously is the worst version of sheperd; No sidequests done, Rachni queen dead, Wrex dead, If choose male Kaidan died, if female Ashley died. With ME 2 history it would probably be bare minimum with everyone dying except Shep on the suicide mission.

Yes, if you start a new game, your Shepard is a clone.

it would be nice if before you commit suicide that you are informed the choice is permanent and game ending. I’ll be pissed if my Shepard dies .. he’s been with me since the first. I want to know what I have to do to prevent this.

If you order someone to go on a suicide mission is it technically murder?
