Ninja Theory: Exclusivity can override other aspects of development

heavenly-sword

Ninja Theory co-founder Tameem Antoniades has told Eurogamer that while making Heavenly Sword, the development team felt caught in the middle of the console war.

Antoniades said that the situation was both “draining” and “unfair”.

“When you are exclusive, sometimes the pressure to demonstrate technology can override other aspects of game development,” he said. “Being involved in one side of a format war as if it’s the machines that make great games can also be draining.

“You get a lot of attention as an exclusive developer which is great, but on the flip side there was a lot of anti-Sony feeling going on which I felt was unfairly being directed at our team.”

Currently, the developer is at work on multiplatform title Enslaved, which has a post-apocalyptic setting. Antoniades calls the move to multiplatform “comfortable” as the team can now focus on just “building as compelling a game as we can”.

It’s your fault for puting your self there. You made your bed so you should live in it.

it’s a free world until the antichrist comes

Live in bed? Well maybe you do but the rest of us only sleep in it. And quit going on about fictional characters.

So true man XBOTS went on a smear campaign against Sony in the PS3′s first year. Every time you clicked a web page it was something about how Heavenly Sword was going to suck or if the PS3 is so much better than where’s the game to show it. They were under a lot of unfair pressure and that’s why I supported them with a day 1 purchase of Heavenly Sword.

I hope Sony would see it in their hearts to give Ninja Theory another shot at making a sequel or prequel to Heavenly Sword. Nariko is too hot to be left on the shelf to rot.

they talk too much if they don’t like it why don’t they go multiplat.

no one is holding their hands big companies are evil and play dirty for the love of money.

I mean if they really want to make more money they would go multiplat.

oh wait they are a sony fanboy game dev.

In their Edge interview this month they say that much of the pressure was down to having to create their own engine and tools and stuff from scratch which left little time to make the actual game. Given that they’ve now switched to Unreal we should get a better idea of what they can actually do this time around.

That’s some impressive reading comprehension you’re showing there, bdh.

No, wait, you’re too busy pushing your own agenda to actually read the stories you comment on, aren’t you. I forgot.

“Given that they’ve now switched to Unreal we should get a better idea of what they can actually do this time around.”

Or maybe we’ll get another excuse. Lets face it, they don’t exactly have pedigree. Kung Fu Chaos was average, Heavenly sword was average… so maybe Enslaved might possibly be average?

To be honest, it’s not exactly filling me with enthusiasm yet.

The preview I read in Games™ (at least I think it was that) made it sound like it may turn out pretty well. Which was surprising.

Excuses, excuses.

The fanboy derision didn’t have any effect on the reviews, did it?

Sure, people (myself included) might have thrown Sony’s claims of first party excellence back in their faces at every opportunity, but lets be fair… This game was just not that good!

Neither was RFOM, but you had the IGN review claiming that it was a “killer app”!

Don’t blame your critics if you make an average game that gets average reviews…

sorry i don’t trust reviews from media. I mean the gaming media lies alot.

they lie about how pc gaming will die for years now.

the even lie about MW2 for pc.

some of the gaming media is paid under the table.

I take the reviews with a grain of salt.

here is my proof

They made an average game. Admittedly, being one of Sony’s touted launch titles lead to unattainable expectations but the game was average; enjoyable but average. The focus was clearly on demonstrating the console’s tech rather than making the best game.

Naughty Dog didn’t seem to be drained that much doing an excellent work…
and now they get praised for that work

@theevilaires

Sony announced that a Heavenly Sword sequel was in the works at their Cambridge studio. Ninja Theory had their studio in the same building as Sony Cambridge. Ninja Theory moved out of the building and found new premises on the other side of town.

You do the maths on the likely relationship between Ninja Theory and Sony, post Heavenly Sword release.

(The sequel plans have since been canned anyway.)

Um G1GA how would you know it wasn’t good. You don’t play 3rd person action games remember. It was reviewed as an 8 which is good by my standards. I guess it didn’t deserve that score to you..someone who never played it right. Then let me say Halo 3 or ODST wasn’t given proper scores either because both of those games under performed as well but yet they got a 10 and a 9…really?

You wanna talk about excuses and the reviews are right all the time. Well whats stopping you from playing UC2 then big shot and don’t dare say MW2 because you fail for it even coming to your mind.

I’m ready to hear your (lame) excuses…
