Microsoft: FFXIII will sell better on 360 than PS3

Microsoft has said that Final Fantasy XIII will sell better on Xbox 360 than PS3 when it’s finally released outside of Japan.
This bit of confidence is based on this week’s NPD data, which also has the console-maker confident that the 360 version of Resident Evil 5 will also outsell its PS3 counterpart.
FFXIII is still a PS3 exclusive in Japan.
More through the links.

Hahahaha come on! It’s PS3 exclusive in Japan FFS, you know – that crazy country where each FF game sells way more copies than there are Japanese citizens.

Now why did you feel you had to ruin your Vodka by adding something to it? Neat, straight from the freezer, or NOTHING!

The 360 has a larger userbase. By the basic law of averages, the game will sell around the same percentage on each format, but since the 360 has more users, the equal percentage is automatically a larger number of people.
Multi-format titles always sell in higher numbers on the 360 simply because it has a larger userbase. That’s not fanboyism, the figures are out there if you want check.
The Japanese market has shrunk year on year. Final Fantasy game or not, it makes up the smallest sector of the gaming market, probably somewhere in the region of 20% of overall worldwide sales.
This *will* sell better on the 360, but not because of any inherent advantage of the format. The PS3 is the better storage medium for the game (Blu-ray storage space likely means higher resolution textures and video quality), but the consumer only cares about what’s cheapest.

Except Japan, where it is not only exclusive but the PS3 has sold very well. That’s a very large market that loves Final Fantasy and can only get it on the PS3. Oh, it releases there before everywhere else, too.
I think it’ll sell more on the PS3.

Not one person I know who owns an X360 gives a shit about FF. They all think RPGs are terrible wastes of time and money. I would be VERY surprised if they equaled the number. By the time FF is released Sony will have given PS3 a price drop (of course because its release is a year away) There is no possible way this is going to be correct. Unless Sony stops selling another PS3 from today on.

I get the feeling that the MS guy wasn’t exactly counting Japanese sales… given there’s no 360 version at all there.

The PS3 isn’t going to make up ground on the 360 because of a price drop, at least not in the frame of time relevant to FFXIII and *especially* not with FFXIII being multiplat.
As for the MS guy, he very well could be right. FF wouldn’t be the first series which tween Sony fanboys have called a “Sony franchise” to sell way better on the 360, although I expect the margin won’t be 2:1 a la GTA4.

Worldwide 360 sales have no chance of outselling PS3 version – Japan will tilt the scales on this just as it has in the past.
FF always sells big numbers in Japan.
US sure, and as he’s responding to NPD I’m guessing that’s what he means. But he should properly caveat his words or expect to get shot down for spouting something that’s frankly unlikely.

Street Fighter IV’s US sales were surprisingly close though considering the difference in userbase, so the PS3 probably had the edge there, percentage-wise. Considering its Sony roots these past few generations and it being a jRPG FFXIII will likely be a lot closer than something like CoD:WaW.
Then again, among Sony communities there’s so much talk of ‘betrayal’ and ‘boycotts’ around Square discussions these days that certain portions of Final Fantasy fans may skip it altogether (of course, being the internet, that probably won’t be as large a group as it appears).

hitnrun, why not? Look what a price drop did for the 360 recently and note how most research points to price as the only significant reason many people are holding off buying a PS3.

I know alot of people who bought there PS3 solely for this game. I know I was one of them, so I’ll still be buying it for PS3 at least.

I know a lot of people who were happy when SE announced the game is going multiplatform, and now aren’t going to buy a PS3 at all.
who cares? we don’t even know if this game will be good.

Final Fantasy games sell over 2 million in Japan. It’ll sell more in the US, but I don’t think it’ll be by a huge amount, I don’t even think it’ll be by more than a million.
