Cryptic showed more on Star Trek Online at Comic Con this weekend, specifically on its Alien Creator. There’s a video of it in action after the break.

The tool’s used for… creating aliens. You can basically play as any race you can come up with in the MMO.

Cryptic says there are “thousands” of possible combinations for your freakish weirdo backwater space inhabitants. There’s a bit more on it here.

Have a watch.

    “Endless options…” of bumpy foreheads.

Looks like the game isn’t going to allow really alien aliens unfortunately then.

Yeah I know, it’s just a bit annoying that something that was limited due to TV budgets and practicality is something being stuck to in the game.

I suppose it is keeping to canon in the fact that humanoid DNA was seeded across the universe but still!

Well if its any consolation Crypic has said that they’d work in some, atleast light form of non-humanoid.

    Whizzo,
In the ST universe it turns out that most humanoid life forms come from an ancient race that ‘seeded’ the universe. We came from them. Vulcans came from them. Klingons, etc. All humanoid races came from them. It was the end of a story arc in Star Trek Voyager. That is how they explain that most characters in Star Trek look like humans with a ridge here or a pointy ear there.

I guess that is better than ‘our franchise started in the 60s and we didn’t have the technology or budget to create enemy races that looked anything other than a human with pointy ears’. Matter of fact, the Klingons in the original show looked like darker humans with fu-manchus and bushy eyebrows. When they created Worf and gave him a turtle shell for a head they explained that Klingons took people and altered themselves genetically so they could infiltrate the human race. It took generations of breeding in order to bring the ridges back into their species (although some of course never were altered).

Long explanation, but there you go. I have a pretty good nerdclopedia mind. =>
