Mirror’s Edge reviews are middling to good
The embargo went up on Mirror’s Edge reviews yesterday, but we were in meetings. So we failed you.
We’re attempting to make up for it by compiling this handy list of scores. The game’s out on Friday.

It got a 6 from Playr this weekend.
It’s a toughie, this one. Everyone says they really like it, but.. and there’s always a ‘but’. And that ‘but’ is usually related to the game being 5 to 7 hours long depending on your skill, or the fact that the combat is rubbish.
I hope it does well for them, so that they can go away and do it better next time. The reviews sort of give the idea that the game could’ve used another six months in development to add a few more levels and iron out some of the kinks.
There are going to be a hell of a lot of pre-owned copies of this in the shops by the end of next week, though.

I’ll definitely play it. I like the fact that it’s short. The combat in the demo was a bit daft, though.

I’ve played no game this or last gen, that just felt so good to play. It’s one of those games (for me anyway) where the gameplay really is it’s own reward. I’m going to go crazy with the time trial mode.

9/10 from HardGame2 (one of the top Spanish VideoGames Online Magazine): http://ps3.hardgame2.com/articulo.php?id=3334
They say that Mirror’s Edge is one of the best games of the year and the only error is the length of the game. I will buy it tomorrow.

Same difference though.
0 – 100 has as many notches as 0.0 to 10.0.

I like the fact it’s something new, though I’ve heard it can be really frustrating at times. Still want to play it though.

It sounds like it’ll be a very marmite game. People will either click with the first person view and contorls, or they won’t.
I personally loved the demo and thought it was fantastic fun. The combat is the weakest part, but hopefully it’s kept to a minimum and I can bounce around rooftops like a crazy spider monkey.
One thing for sequel if its not in this version. Trackmania style MP racing. You can see everyone else doing their time trail, but you can’t interact with directly keeping it to the best time rather than pushing people out of the way.
Just a thought.

The snippet of IGN’s review I’ve seen on Metacritic seems a bit silly – they whinge about the moveset being limited, which is (IMO) kind of like getting your knickers in a twist because Motorstorm only lets you brake, accelerate and boost – the complexity lies in combining these abilities with the vagaries of the level design.

Actually reading the text of the various reviews, it seems that any middling scores can be attributed to the reviewer in question being a bit shit at it.
Mirror’s Edge is a skill-based game, and therefore people are more than capable of being a bit shit at it. It’s the same thing as LBP really, and if people keep criticising that then eventually we’ll just end up with a market of games which consist of little more than plot-based screen-savers where we only get to make rare, plot-forking decisions, not unlike what’s hapened to the poor Japanese.
So yay Mirror’s Edge, it definitely needs to be praised. More skill-based games, please?

I think the length and lack of replayability’s been pushed forward quite a bit. That’s just from skimming conclusions, though.

I assumed the replayability factor would be “flow.” I noticed in the demo that as soon as you “got” the controls and the timing of you leaps and jumps became more synchronised with the surroundings, the game’s appeal shot up.
Surely the aim would be to run effortlessly throughout the levels, barely stopping, as that to me, only from the demo mind, is what the game’s about.

There are time trial modes which are designed for you to perfect your “flow” as clearly that’s the hook of the game. Nailing all the moves sequentially so you breeze through the level.
I think all the time trials stacked end to end come to 70 mins in a game with allegedly 5-6 hours campaign.
The Destructoid review has all this in and is a good read.

This game has a reasonably comprehensive demo so every can determine if they think it’s worthwhile FOR FREE!
God bless EA. What’d we do without ‘em eh?

Nothing’s FREE!
I think the really important thing about the Mirror’s Edge demo is:
Don’t play this demo only ONCE!
To really dig what the game is all about, you must play the demo several times.

I think it’s great, and I also think it’s the perfect length. Any longer and it’d get repetitive. Took me just under 9 hours, as I got really stuck twice. The signposting is shocking on occasions, while there are a couple of really cheap difficulty spikes – there’s one section right near the end where you need to make a perfect jump and you’re being shot at – get hit in mid-air and you won’t make it. Grrr.
Besides, time-trialling is where it’s at, and that will give it substantial longevity for some. And it looks – and sounds – fucking glorious. Definitely worth playing – whether it’s worth renting or buying depends on whether you like it enough to replay the thing or if you fancy your hand at the speedruns.
