Cyberpunk 2077’s state on base PS4 and Xbox One has lead to an awkward situation for developer CD Projekt Red.
It is no secret at this point that Cyberpunk 2077 is a bit of a disaster on PS4 and Xbox One. CD Projekt Red never showed the game running on base consoles, and fans anticipated the worse.
No one, however, was ready for just how unfinished the game is on these consoles, even keeping in mind its current state on next-gen and PC.
Cyberpunk 2077 suffers major framerate issues on PS4 and Xbox One, to say nothing of all the other rendering and visual bugs, some of which are present on other platforms. Those versions were blasted by reviewers, who rightly called out its many technical problems in their coverage, with Digital Foundry calling performance on PS4 “unacceptable.”
All of that reached a tipping point for many players, who have been helping each other get refunds after getting it themselves, including from historically stringent Sony.
In a message posted to Twitter this morning, CDPR apologised for the sate of the game on PS4 and Xbox One, saying that it should have “paid more attention” to performance on these consoles. The developer admitted that not showing the game running there is partly to blame for fans’ disappointment.
CDPR also asked fans for patience as the team continues to work on all reported problems, promising a patch “within the next seven days”, which will be the last before the holiday break. More major updates are in the works, with the first targeting January, and the next February.
“Together these should fix the most prominent problems gamers are facing on last-gen consoles. They won’t make the game on last-gen look like it’s running on a high-spec PC or next-gen console, but it will be closer to that experience than it is now,” CDPR said of the two major patches.
With that in mind, the developer acknowledged that some have no interest in waiting for these updates and would instead like a refund. Though the developer wants players to “give us a chance,” it understands why many are requesting refunds.
CDPR advised players to go back to where they purchased Cyberpunk 2077 to request a refund, be it retail stores for physical copies, or Sony and Microsoft for digital purchases. Should you not succeed in getting a refund from your point of purchase, you have until December 21 (a week from this writing) to contact CDPR support at email@example.com and the team will “do our best to help you.”
