Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition has been announced by Capcom after retail outlets revealed the game earlier than planned.

  • Extra Battle Mode
  • New V-trigger moves
  • Gallery
  • New User Interface
  • Season 1 DLC characters

Season 2 of the 2017 Character Pass and DLC content for Street Fighter 5 will continue until the end of the year, with one final character still to be announced and released along with additional costumes.

Original Story

There is going to be an Arcade Edition of Street Fighter 5, because all these retail listings can't be wrong.

A listing for Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition was spotted earlier today on Amazon US for PlayStation 4. This is not the first time we're hearing about it, either.

A couple of weeks ago, the same version was briefly available on the website of a reputable retailer in the UK. While that listing didn't bring any new information about what's actually in the Arcade Edition, today's Amazon page thankfully has.

In thew new Arcade Mode, players can "hoose from six different paths themed after classic Street Fighter games," the mode's description reads. Playing this mode lets you unlock "hundreds" of illustrations.

Extra battle is another new distraction that tasks players with completing timed challenges and win exclusive costumes.

The biggest news here is that the Arcade Edition is bringing new V-triggers for all characters, upping the number of available V-triggers two for each one. This is a major upgrade, and it'll no doubt change how the game is played when you can pick between different V-triggers. Finally, the Arcade Edition brings with it a UI redesign with "exciting pre-and-post-fight effects."

The Amazon page lists a January 16, 2018 release date, though it could just be a placeholder. The Amazon listing also states that Street Fighter 5's user base won't be split - it'll remain cross platform between PS4 and PC, and all existing owners will get an update to bring everyone under the new Arcade Edition umbrella. At the same time, Capcom can enjoy a new soft launch for the new retail version.

This is something fans of the series actually asked for, after Capcom botched the game's initial launch. Unlike the many Street Fighter 4 editions, this does not split the community and offers Capcom a fresh start, a win-win.
