GTA's creators discuss first game and how it almost wasn't made

Grand Theft Auto 5 is about to drop on the games industry like a ton of bricks, and ahead of tomorrow's launch, the series creators have discussed the concept's birth while at now-defunct studio DMA Design.

Speaking with the Guardian in a video interview, former DMA developer Gary Penn said of the original game, "It looked rough from the start, and it looked rough at the end. It was an unstable unplayable mess at the start, and by the time I got there it was still an unplayable, unstable mess."

It transpired that no one wanted to work on it, it was going to be killed off every week, it was buggy and its future never seemed ensured. As we now know, it eventually came out and ended up being a resounding success.
