From today Android users can play Plants vs. Zombies 2, PopCap’s free-to-play tower defense game, around two months after it first released on iOS. PopCap had admitted that it has struggled in the past with bringing its games to other platforms, but they believe they’re now getting the hang of it.

Plants vs Zombies 2 has launched on Android, slightly more than two months after it launched on iOS. The new release requires an Android 2.3 device or higher, with a gigabyte of RAM and an ARMv7 or higher running at 1GHZ. Additionally, to celebrate the launch, the ingame jalapeno is 65% off this week.

Plants vs Zombies 2 is only on iOS so far because PopCap likes to start with one version and port from there, according to franchise business director Tony Leamer – a more socially acceptable answer to why Plants vs Zombies hasn’t turned up outside Apple’s domain than yesterday’s little debacle.

Plants vs Zombies 2 will be released on Android next month, according to a source familiar with EA’s operation speaking with Polygon. The game launched on iOS last month, and while the source didn’t provide a specific date, you can start looking forward to an October filled with zombie and plant action, apparently. Back in August, EA announced the game had been downloaded close to 25 million times since it was released.

Plants vs Zombies 2 has been downloaded close to 25 million times since it was released. This is a major uptick since August 22 when it was announced it had been downloaded 16 million times. The figure exceeds lifetime downloads figures of the original Plants vs Zombies. The game is currently available on iOS and will be released on other platforms later this year. In a press release regarding the newly-revealed social effort Plants vs Zombies Adventures, PopCap also mentioned that the sequel to the best-selling tower defence title has been delayed. Originally expected sometime in northern spring, Plants vs Zombies 2 is now lasted for an “early summer” release. We still know almost nothing about the much-anticipated title, but you can probably expect it on a range of platforms thanks to EA’s porting grunt.
