New Overwatch heroes to be added one at a time, Play of the Game getting "cinematic" angle

Overwatch will be getting new heroes as well as new maps in the future, Blizzard promised that much before launch. With that said, the studio's experience with hero releases during the beta will inform what's to come.

Speaking to Eurogamer, game director Jeff Kaplan said that Blizzard is not sure yet about the perfect schedule for hero and map releases. Kaplan gave an example of Mei, D.Va and Genji, all of which released at the same time, and the negative feedback Blizzard received afterwards.

"That was a lesson that we learnt. When we come out with our first new heroes post-launch, we're going to do them one at a time for a while, until we feel the game really stabilises," he told the site, adding that introducing a bunch of heroes at a time could be "disruptive" to the meta.

Upcoming heroes and map updates will be discussed as we get further into the summer.

Elsewhere in the interview, Kaplan explained how Blizzard is planning to improve Play of the Game - the post-game highlight that features, in theory, one of the match's top plays. According to Kaplan, the developers want to make these highlights more cinematic.

"We feel like for your standard play of the game, like a Reaper getting a death blossom kill on four people, they look great and they're really fun to watch," the director said.

"But some of the other ones like the Torbjörn who's dead and his turret's killing people, or a Widowmaker getting a really impressive shot from across the map: those aren't showing great right now. They're actually really cool moments but we feel like there's a way to show them more cinematically."

Though this isn't something we'll be seeing in the game soon. Kaplan also added that these new angles would showcase moments like last-minute saves or funny/accidental encounters, a lot better.
