Dreamfall Chapters looks amazing after converting to Unity 5

Dreamfall Chapters has had a major makeover, and now looks - and runs! - better than ever.

Partway through development of Dreamfall Chapters, Unity 4 began to be phased out and replaced with Unity 5. Faced with major performance problems on the original engine, Red Thread elected to convert the game to Unity 5.

Over on Medium, studio lead Ragnar Tørnquist admitted the conversion has been extremely difficult and expensive, nearly leading to disaster for the small indie team.

"Several hundred thousands of dollars is a massive pile of cash. Knowing what we know today, the decision to upgrade would have been a lot harder," he said.

"We’d still have done it, though. F**k it, it was worth it."

Check out these in-development screenshots of the Unity 5 build, which is available now for free on Steam. Tørnquist noted that Red Thread's artists are still working on tweaking the lighting, so things like character's faces not being lit in some scenes will be fixed.

Dreamfall Chapters Book Four is coming soon, by the way.
