Payday 2: Deathwish DLC gets first trailer, adds new difficulty tier & armoured SWAT types

Payday 2 developer Overkill Software has published a new trailer for its free Deathwish DLC, which sees the game’s police force upping its game with heavily-armoured ‘Dozer’ troops and GENSEC elite guards. The perfect crime just got a lot harder.

UPDATE: We’ve asked Payday 2′s David Goldfarb for an update on Payday 2 DLC for PS3 and Xbox 360, and he replied, “both patches are in test right now, no word on when they will be approved.” They will each bring the respective formats up to a particular PC update, but Goldfarb was unable to comment further.

ORIGINAL STORY: The new guards will appear if you pick Payday 2′s ‘Deathwish’ four-skull difficulty setting. The official Deathwish page is full of art and details. It sounds like it’s going to be really painful.

Here’s a breakdown from publisher 505 Games:

  • Death Wish difficulty level can be applied every heist available to date. No one knows how Death Wish difficulty alters a heist – bridges that were whole could now destroyed, skylights could have appeared in buildings roofs and if I were you I’d be careful not to use the wrong ingredients while cooking meth…
  • Two new enemy types – Two new enemy types have been added to the game; the GENSEC Elite SWAT’s and the haunting, LMG-wielding Elite Bulldozer!
  • A free melee weapon – Still not difficult enough? Have a pair of Brass Knuckles on the house and make it a real challenge. The “350K” brass knuckles packs the punch of 350,000 community members (the 3rd largest community on Steam!).
  • 35 new achievements to unlock – Players will have a whopping 35 new difficulty related achievements to unlock.

The DLC is free, and between Feb 28 and March 2, Payday 2 will be 50% off for newcomers.

I am so pleased to hear that at least some of the DLC slash patches are coming to consoles, but whether it’ll be too little too late for me I’m not too sure – my Payday 2 is gathering digital dust somewhere in the dark corners of my PS3′s memory.
I managed to hit level 57 if I remember correctly, but by that point I felt so bored repeatedly hitting the same missions over and over in the same way again and again – then going on YouTube to see cool Infamy features and awesome new weapons… which I can’t have.
To be honest right now, I can’t recommend the console versions because I really do feel like I’ve been cheated out of my money on my console copy – sold a game where most of the great new features aren’t going to be on offer at any foreseeable point.
Let’s see what the eventual update brings and whether it can get me playing and recommending again.
