The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt gets a short trailer during VGX

Sunday, 8th December 2013 01:19 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was given the trailer treatment during VGX tonight, and sadly, it’s only around a minute long. I wish it were longer, but I’ll take any look at it I can get, personally. Watch it below. The only date provided for the title so far is “sometime next year” on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

That all depends… If Nintendo release Zelda Wii U at the end of next year, you know Witcher 3 is going to come second… ;)

    (Don’t cry, it’s inevitable)

  7. Erthazus

@6, Nope. Zelda wiiU won’t be as close to Witcher 2 gameplay mechanics. Wake me up when furniture in Zelda games will have physics with multi region locations in the world that is bigger and more detailed then Skyrim. Oh and fantastic story and dialogs included with choices that matters.

    ;)

when the fuck did zelda ever care about physics? if thats all you care about in games then you are pretty much cancer to the game industry, zelda beats witcher with gameplay, witcher is just fable 2 with traps and bombs

A very apt nick you have there I must admit. It’s obvious you have NO idea, what the Witcher franchise is, and you haven’t even said what is so great about Zelda games. Storywise and graphics-wise, TW3 will almost surely be better (as Zelda games apparently don’t care much about those either), and about the rest, like gameplay and innovation…we’ll just have to see. Nobody knows exactly how this game is going to play, but it probably will be closer to a mesh of Skyrim and TW2, than anything else. If they deliver on what they promise, than this “Zelda beats Witcher with gameplay” comment is going to have to be reversed (not that i agree with it if even if we compare Zelda’s gameplay formula to TW1 and TW2).

Also, you don’t get to say what is, and what isn’t (or who) a “cancer to the game industry”. Except maybe microtransactions, overpriced DLC, DRM etc. Cause most people tend to agree it leads nowhere. And guess what? CDProjekt (developers and partly publishers of TW3) thinks exactly the same way, that’s why their games are DRM free on PC, DLC is free for their games, and there are no microtransactions.
Whatever the case, it certainly doesn’t seem like game physics lovers are a blight upon the world of gamers, and it’s not a perk, that the developers of Zelda don’t care about them. Certainly, there are more important things for them to focus on in a game, but not doing something doesn’t deserve praise. It’s the things they actually do.

As graphics and physics are clearly NOT the most important component of a good game, they still increase immersion, make the game world more stunning and believable, and are still a part of what makes a game better, or worse. So does the story. In fact, IMO there is no one most important element for a game, it’s a sum of all of its virtues and flaws that decides if a game is good, and truly great games are at least good in all of those aspects and they combine them well into a cohesive experience.

I have nothing against Zelda (I haven’t played a single game in the series for more than a few hours, but once I get a Wii U, maybe I’ll revisit some of those games), but I know The Witcher series is insenely good, and TW3 shapes itself up to be the best one yet, with no compromises made for old tech (it’s not a cross gen title like so many others right now), and many, many hours put into developing it by dedicated creators to make this “the best RPG to date” (their words, not mine).

So praise your Zelda if you have reason for it, but TW has nothing to do with Fable except that they are both RPGs.

The witcher has a pretty large back and shoulders. Almost weird, but the game looked neat.

  14. Erthazus

@The_Red, Do you know what is RPG? RPG is roleplaying game where you have a role and dialogs. So no, these two Action-hack and slash games with statistics has nothong to do with RPG.

@8, “when the fuck did zelda ever care about physics? if thats all you care about in games then you are pretty much cancer to the game industry, zelda beats witcher with gameplay, witcher is just fable 2 with traps and bombs”

in other words. You are the one that is a cancer to the industry that can’t explain how Zelda beats Witcher with gameplay.

  15. The_Red

    @Erthazus
You seriously consider Dark Souls to be a hack n slash game? Demons Souls alone is more of a RPG than both Witcher games combined. The things can you do with numbers, stats and character building in those titles are unparalleled in modern games.

Of course there is no denying that Souls games are a bit action-y but the same goes for Witcher titles (And combo / combat heavy focus of Witcher 2 is much closer to a full hack n slash title than any Souls title). Sadly there aren’t many absolute RPGs like Fallout 1-2 or Torment left.

  17. Erthazus

    @the_Red,
These games are good but they are Action hack and slash games.

    You know what is RPG?

It is ROLE PLAYING GAME. “ROLE” – is the most important part and in these games (Dark souls) you are some dude with a sword without any personality or motivation.

It’s Hack and slash with statistics. Witcher 3 on the other hand is a true RPG where character development matters, where dialog matters, where setting matters. Where choices you make matters and it is going to have the world where DS1/DS2/Dark souls will dream about with it’s details, quality and quantity. With battle system that has fantastic skill-tree system and combat that is second to none with physics all over the place and obviously great CD Projekt RED Engine that looks great.

Dark souls 2 have pathetic havoc physics to this day and you are talking about it’s battle system? Lol. Really?

    @Gekidami, “Multi-region open world.
    Oh… :/”

Dark Souls 2 is more of an Action RPG than a true RPG. You don’t have conversation paths, you don’t really influence the world at all. I’m not saying the game sucks, i love the Souls games. But saying DS2 is more of an RPG than the Witcher games is just stupid.

@Hcw87, Agree. DS2 and Zelda can be compared but Witcher 3 is another thing.

Witcher 3 can be compared to Dragon Age: Inquisition, Wasteland 2, Torment:Tides of numenera and other Roleplaying games that has a story, dialogs and decisions.

Dark Souls is heavy influenced by dungeon crawling genre that has statistics and it is very linear and it’s mechanics are all based on strategic combat in Third Person mode.

Seriously, how fucking utterly insane do you have to be to compare a masterpiece like the Witcher to copy-pasta dreck like Zelda? How far away from reality are you?

This game looks fucking gorgeous. Gameplay, writing and art-direction. Never seen it so well combined before. For me it already looks like it could be a game of the year.

Anyway, gotta start scratching those pennies for a new PC.

Dark Souls isn’t linear, there is multiple paths everywhere….

Its linear to a full fledged free roam game sure, but a game doesn’t have to be free roam for it to be non linear.

Sounds like Erth played the souls games and died too much only to quit after 30-60 minutes.

They are great RPG’s and just because they don’t have the standard form of narrative doesn’t mean it’s not an RPG. It tells a story and you can define who your character is through your actions and not through some preset choices.

When you say that Dark Souls is linear you clearly haven’t played these games through, it’s probably the least linear RPG on the market at the moment. Since you don’t even know this there is no reason to even considering discussing this any further, you clearly haven’t played the games more than a few hours.

Dark Souls is as much an RPG as The Witcher is, they just tell their stories in different ways. My personal favorite might just be The Witcher 3 but we’ll have to see, I love both series.

Witcher 2 combat was pretty bad, Gothic 3 levels of bad, and a massive departure from the first, I’m not sure why you think 3 is going to have “combat that is second to none”. Dark Souls’ combat was miles ahead of both Witcher games, though battles in the first Witcher were nice to watch.

Dark Souls 2 is the only game I’m waiting for. The video above is pretty special but I need to force myself to play through Witcher 2 first.

    -

Story, dialogue and decisions = adventure game traits.

Dungeon crawling and the use of stats as a mechanic to define characters and allow for progression = what RPGs always used to be about.

So your logic for suggesting that The Witcher 3 is somehow more of an RPG than Dark Souls 2 is incredibly flawed. Both are action-RPGs with different emphasises on the action and adventure elements.

@32: “Dungeon crawling and the use of stats as a mechanic to define characters and allow for progression = what RPGs always used to be about.”

In games, maybe, but what role playing is actually about, as any Pen & Paper player will tell you, is actually playing out a role which is abstractly defined by the numeric value of certain attributes.

I have a feeling that Erth is just being contrary for the sake of it. I mean the RPG genre started with Dungeons and Dragons, creating your own character and leveling its skills and talents as you see fit. So a game in which you play an already existing character in the World could never be MORE of an RPG than the blank slate that is the choosen undead. Its why they made Geralt an amnesiac in the first place, so it would not be jarring to have him ask people he already knows who they are.

It makes no sense. Unless of course you are willing being belligerent for the reactions sake.

Which of course is something that Erth would never do.

“I have a feeling that Erth is just being contrary for the sake of it.”

Of course he is, TW3 is one of the PCs biggest showcases for next year while the Souls series started out on consoles. So in his twisted little mind he has every reason to put it on a pedestal. Still, both sides can be considered right here if you think about it.

I’m fairly certain Erth is a CDPR employee. Either that or there’s some kind of eastern-european pride magnifying his fanboyism. I’ve never met any other avid PC gamers or avid cRPG fans who praise the series so highly. In fact many cRPG purists hold it in low regard.

I hope the game does not get too hacked down by lack of processing for consoles in general, especially for sand box which Witcher is known for vast open areas.

I am a witcher and witcher will remain!

Comparing TW franchise to anything else is wrong, it is like comparing Barbie to Monster High dolls, it just does not make sense to torture yourself remotely trying to.

  39. Erthazus

@Hybridpsycho, “Sounds like Erth played the souls games and died too much only to quit after 30-60 minutes.”

and do you have a “proof” of that statement? Of course you don’t. Because I played both games on launch and finished them both. They are not That hard. “World Of Warcraft raiding pre-patch mode with 10/25 people – Hard”
The only hard thing about these games is that interface is cluttered in and you need to react quickly to the situation as fast as possible but that does not make them RPG. They are Action hack and slash games with statistics or Action/RPG at best.

“They are great RPG’s and just because they don’t have the standard form of narrative doesn’t mean it’s not an RPG. It tells a story and you can define who your character is through your actions and not through some preset choices”

First of all. Dark Souls 2 is an ACTION RPG and is not a true RPG because story, dialogs and DECISIONS is the last thing these games can offer.
In Witcher 3 this is oppossite. Your choice matters. Same goes to games like Dragon Age:Inquisition. Where CHOICE and what you do matters a lot. You build a character in these games and not just STATS.

Dark Souls is a good game. I never said that it’s a bad game. I want Dark Souls 2 the same way you want but I want it for other reasons then Witcher 3. I expect from Dark Souls 2:

    1) Fantastic content
    2) Fantastic battle system
    3) Good stats/Skill tree
    4) Decent mechanics
    5) Decent encounters

but I’m not looking forward to DS2 story, story progression, choices and other stuff that define “”"Roleplaying”"”

@Dirk, Combat in Witcher 2 is not bad, it’s just people anticipated a much better combat. It’s soul is not in combat but on other things and will continue to be this way.

@absolutezero, “I have a feeling that Erth is just being contrary for the sake of it. I mean the RPG genre started with Dungeons and Dragons, creating your own character and leveling its skills and talents as you see fit. ”

But have you ever played Dungeons and Dragons? So far not. Statistics in this game is the last interesting thing. It is basically a tool for your character development against monsters, traps or locked doors.
You actually roleplay in the game with your friends and Dungeon Master. That’s why you have alignments and other roleplaying statistics in Dungeons and Dragons games that help you DEFINE your character in the game.

If you don’t play your role then you suck at these games.

Said a guy who is praising shitty TES4:Oblivion?
Come on. You are the last guy that I should listen to. The franchise is great and because you live in the basement does not make this game less popular in RPG fanbase. Cheers.

@41 I like Oblivion, but not because it’s a good RPG. It’s a fairly poor RPG, we all know that. I like it because it’s a great platform for modding.

The Witcher 3 is as much of an action RPG as Dark Souls 2. And you clearly need a history lesson on roleplaying video games if you think story and dialogue are what make a “true” RPG.

Again ~ an interactive storyline with dialogue trees is more of a defining trait of the adventure video game genre, not the RPG video game genre. What separates an RPG from an adventure game is the use of stats/numeric rules to allow for character definition and progression. So if you’re going to judge how “true” an RPG is, judge it by its character creation system / progression system. Strong adventure game elements may make it a better game overall depending on your opinion, but that doesn’t make it more of an RPG.

“The Witcher 3 is as much of an action RPG as Dark Souls 2. And you clearly need a history lesson on roleplaying video games if you think story and dialogue are what make a “true” RPG.”

Because Roleplaying in Dark Souls or Zelda is the last thing when it comes to ROLE PLAYING.

See? Little word. “Role” – this is the definition of a genre. These games can’t offer you character progression except for statistics.

Dark souls is hack and slash with statistics. This is it’s strong mechanics and it is based on combat. This is Action Roleplaying at best which is not a bad thing.

    #43 1 year ago
  44. UuBuU

@44 You’re not listening, are you? BOTH games are action-RPGs by definition, because they both combine action based real-time combat with RPG mechanics.

Also, only idiots take the word “role” literally when it comes to defining the RPG video game genre. You can assume the role of a character and experience some form of progression in everything from platformers to story-driven action-adventure games like Red Dead.
