Gran Turismo 6 coming to PS3 this year, exec suggests

Thursday, 28th February 2013 01:57 GMT By Brenna Hillier

A slim comment from Sony Worldwide Studios boss Michael Denny suggests the next Gran Turismo may be upon us sooner than expected.

In an interview with Silicon Republic, Denny said the PlayStation 3 still has a lot of life in it and rattled off a list of upcoming releases

“Look at the games coming out on the PlayStation 3 like The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, GT6, and then on the third-party side of things another fantastic Assassin’s Creed, GTA,” he said.

The way the comment is presented in the article suggests the games listed are expected within the next year, putting Gran Turismo 6′s tentative release down for sometime before February 2014.

Gran Turismo 6 has been rumoured as a PlayStation 4 title, but it has been in development for literal years, so is equally likely to turn up as a PlayStation 3 swansong.

Sony has never formally announced the racer sequel but it’s something of an open secret as Polyphony Digital has nothing else on its plate, talks about it all the time, and has been spotted in the wild gathering reference materials.

Gran Turismo 5 shipped in December 2010. It took five years to develop, and series creator Kazunori Yamauchi said it was held back by the PlayStation 3. Despite the lengthy development times, the Gran Turismo series is one of the pinnacles of the genre and has shifted nearly 70 million units.

Thanks, IGN.

This is actually an old report. I commented on it at other places too, and I think its a typing error, since the main source gives no indication like that.

@2 while i agree that gt6 would be a good system seller to have at launch you have to look at it from a business point of view. you are not going to convince the mass market to drop 500$ and buy gt6 at this time. they are probably going to be selling the ps4 system at a loss initially. they are making money on ps3 systems sold so bring out gt6 on it and move more ps3′s and offset the loss you make on the ps4. hardcore fans are the only ones that are probably going to be buying the ps4 at launch and there are going to be shortages as well. this way you keep people from selling their ps3′s and try to get the hardcore crowd to buy the new driving game drive club and other new ips so they can establish them. in 2 years when you drop the price of the ps4 you bring out the big guns like uncharted and gran turismo 7 to kickstart the ps4 and phase out the ps3. 10 year plan ! remember

on another note ps3/ps4 may be a better option but i don’t know if polyphony has been working on 2 versions!

PS4 will outsell the new Xbox in 2014…because of….GT6? The sequel to a IMO very overrated racing game? Where half of the cars lacked any real detail and so on? Nah. We don’t even know what MS has planned for games, it’s way too early to say anything.

^i don’t play racing games so i cant exactly speak to the quality of those but it is the best selling game for playstation with gran turismo selling 9 million. so it can definitely move a lot of systems especially in europe.i believe if you are referring to erthazus comment he said ps3 will start outselling xbox 360 in the US if gt6 is released for ps3 and is a cheap alternative for people that cant afford the ps4 or 720.

Should release it in 3rd year of the PS4 life cycle and it shouldn’t be on PS3. I know you have to get the PS3 to the 10 year life goal but not like this. Gran Turismo is losing its spark. It needs to be re-done with fun being the main emphasis.

    Response for Sony to EuroGamer-
“In 2010, Kazunori Yamauchi confirmed that Polyphony Digital had commenced development for Gran Turismo 6. We look forward to sharing further details on this title in the near future.”

They are not denying it. So it may indeed be true.
