Comedy in games: Borderlands 2 writer on being funny

With games becoming more comedic, Sam Clay asked the lead writer of Borderlands 2, Anthony Burch, what his thoughts were on the subject. How difficult is it to write comedy for games? Easier than a stand-up comedian?

Borderlands’ tongue-in-cheek comedy could be compared in humour to a stand-up comedian’s gags or a radio sketch. How’s it done? What’s the key to making the player laugh? And what actually is funny in a video game?

That was cool Sam. Something that struck me about Borderlands 2 that never realized until Anthony explained on one of the podcast that I listened to, is that the jokes are two years old. Its crazy to me because I find the game pretty humorous and for comedy to hold up as well as I felt it did is great. I think Anthony, and his sister, are really talented. I think Gearbox did good on getting him to write the game. The finished product held up to my expectations in all respects.

Nice video. Definitely was right on the stand up part and how challenging and confident you have to be. I thank him for Brick and Scooter as they had me laughing on many occasions.
