Halo 4: ‘we’re not ready to show the Master Chief’s face’ – 343

Monday, 8th October 2012 10:48 GMT By Dave Cook

Halo 4 developer 343 Industries has revealed that it’s not prepared to reveal Master Chief’s chiselled mug just yet, or at all, but that it isn’t entirely afraid of killing the Spartan off, according to 343′s Frank O’Connor.

Speaking with Eurogamer, O’Connor explained that while the studio isn’t ready to reveal Chief’s face, his face has been well-documented before, adding, “The funny thing about the Chief is he’s actually really well described.”

“If you went down into that line and found a nerd with a deep cannon Halo t-shirt and said describe the Master Chief to this police sketch artist, that police sketch artist would then produce a perfectly accurate rendering of an older man, almost painfully pale, almost albino white, with pale blue eyes, reddish hair, close cropped to a skin head, and maybe the last remnants of freckles he had when he was a kid.”

On the subject of killing off Master Chief, O’Connor stated, “That’s a conversation I can’t get into. I’ll say that in Halo 4, things happen. Previously we’ve been scared to commit to difficult paths in our game, but good interesting stories have things that happen in them that are not comfortable and that are meaningful and that are permanent.”

“I’m not trying to hint at something other than our general philosophy and the shift in the attitude we’re taking about storytelling. We can make the story matter more to people by doing things that matter.”

“That’s not rocket science. Luckily we have a publisher and owner that allows us that freedom and they trust us to make the right decisions with the fiction and the universe.”

Would it be a mistake to reveal Master Chief’s face? Would it be an even bigger mistake to kill him off? Project your thoughts into the comment box below.

I think they will never show his face, because of the race identity. And thats one of the reasons Halo is so successful.

And MS knows that and will never allow it.

Look at Binary Domain, Killzone etc…
The black dude has always the minor role.

Showing his face would serve no purpose. Master Chief is not a face, it’s a symbol. The green armor, the helmet, that’s Master Chief. That’s what people think of when they think of him.
It’s like Darth Vader, they could hint at what he looks like, but not reveal it until the very end, so we can see he was human after all.

they should never show his face. and not because of race or any crap like that. the mystery behind John S117 is what makes him so bad ass! he was intended to be mysterious. thats why they named him john. when you hear joh what do think? john doe right? some one whos true identity is, you guessed it, a mystery. and as far as killing him is conserned, come on. do you really think anything could kill master chief?
