SOE – 70% of DCUO players are on PS3, proving MMOs work on console

Wednesday, 18th July 2012 15:47 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

SOE boss John Smedley has said 70% of DC Universe Online players are playing the game through PS3.

Speaking with GI International, Smedley said SOE and CCP proved free-to-play games are a viable market on PS3 when supported through the PSN service.

“It’s 70% of the audience. Free-to-play on PlayStation 3 is huge,” he said. “In fact, right now, it’s us with DCUO and Free Realms and our friends at CCP with Dust 514 that are going to prove that this market really works.

“There’s a lot of people that go through that store and it’s so easy to find and download these games that it’s a great business model. A lot of people have already stored their credit card information so it’s very frictionless if they do want to buy something.

“We can put out thousands of items and it feels very frictionless. The remarkable thing is with a game like Free Realms where there’s literally thousands of items to buy it, has to be a solid platform to begin with to support that. It’s no small thing to be able to that. It’s a business model of the future.”

DC Universe Online went free-to-play in October, and Smedley said despite the stigma still attached to anything labeled “free-to-play”, the numbers don’t lie, and while DCUO may lose a few players when a new game comes out, the players eventually come back.

“Free-to-play is the ultimate expression of a free market in video gaming,” he said. “It’s completely about quality, there’s no purer way to see whether you have a good game or not than by saying ‘this is free, do you want to play it?’ I would argue that free-to-play is much more pure than regular games because with those marketing can determine who picks up the game.

“When another MMO launches we track very carefully how many players we lose to it. We can tell when the bad ones come out because they might have a lot of hype up front and we lose players for a couple of days, but they come right back so we immediately know if something is not good.

“Then again with a game like Diablo III we’ll see them go away for weeks. I was one of them! It’s right in front of us when that happens.”

That proves that your MMO suck for the PC.

DCUO is a horrible MMORPG compared to dozens that are on the PC. On consoles you don’t have any alternative.

I agree that MMO can work on console, and glad it did that well for sony, i did play it earlier in its lifecycle, when you have to paid a monthly amount, and i did like it a lot, now i dont play it because i dont have that free space in my 160GB ps3, and my 60gb Fat one, i dont want to update it, in order to not loose the OS feature, but i did like it a lot.

Having said that i hope this can work on the WiiU too, i mean MMO, and that they are succesfull on the WiiU, that gamepad is so suited for MMO.

WiiU Pad is not suited for MMO. No Fucking Way In Hell you will be able to play something like World Of Warcraft on it because first of all that thing must have MULTITOUCH which it does not have and of course you will kill that controller playing something like WoW.

“I agree that MMO can work on console”

Starcraft II can work too with Wii mote you know?

    gosh, stop this stupidity.

The WiiU controller will be great for RPGs in general as well as MMOs. Just hope the network is there to support such games.

#4 Well that will be the key issue, but i think they are on the right track, lets wait and see.

As much as i appreciate your opinion, i would also appreciate the non insulting comments, imagine if we all see the things the same way, it will be boring, having said that i dont think dont having multitouch will affect MMO on the WiiU, single touch will be sufficient, multitouch will be more troubling than anything else, like a core, but again that is a preference thing, what i do prefer not the others, i understand that, at least let´s wait and see how the dragon quest MMO fairs on the WiiU, before doom it prior hand.

Erthazus does raise a good point though, saying 70% of your audience is playing on PS3 is not very significant on its own.

What’s your total playerbase and how does that compare with your contemporaries? That’s what matters.

Lets say DCUO has X number of players, 0.3X are PC players, now does LotRO or Age of Connan Online or whatever other f2p MMO’s are currently out there also have 0.3X players or roughly 0.3X players, or do they have significantly more or significantly less than that?

Spin, spin, spin the shit numbers, spin, spin.

I think the WiiU would be a great place for MMOs, the controler offers so many possibilities….

That being said, I doubt the system will see a high profile MMO grace it. I could see it hosting some quirky asian MMO f2p type games. And in truth, that could be fun too.

Controller on WiiU would be great, bigger problem would be storage for this sort of game.

If I remember right Everquest Online Adventures (PS2) sold very well and had a rather healthy community. The proble with it was lack of content flow, and that will kill almost any MMO. I really enjoyed playing that game, of course it launched preWoW. And tbh, wow raised the bar and rewrote the rules for MMOs.

I think wow would work on a console. But I think a revised wow, with only Battlegrounds and maybe a handfull of DGs, all scaled to a different console friendly gear/skill system(ie wattered down) would really work.

Imagine something on the scope of Wintergrasp for nxtxb. Would sell millions.

And I agree with Doc, WiiU storage could be a major problem for the system, MMO or otherwise.

#8 yeah the storage is the biggest issue, i dont know how they can work on a solution regarding that, good point.

Do we know what storage options WiiU will have? An HDD would be essential I guess.

Erthazus as usual has no idea what he’s talking about. You dont reply to spam, its best to stick his ignorant irrelevant bile in the spam pile.

@Gadzooks, You are the only one that know shit here. Go back to your Xbox 360 cave and share your opinion there because you never played mmorpg at the hardcore level.

You never finished Dragon Soul Raid in Heroic and you will never finish it.

I know what i’m talking about. MMORPG’s require macros. A LOT of macros and if you don’t understand that than there is nothing that can help your brain because it is dead right now.

Macros are essential to huge blockbuster mmorpg games and Wii U won’t have them + without multitouch it is impossible to create right combinations and classic WoW mechanic requires keyboard for many reasons, not the tablet or a controller because it’s not going to work. some people for example buy mouse that have num pad. Example: Razer MMO mouse products.

Something like DCUO or crappy Final Fantasy 14 can work, but that is pretty much the only thing that can work on consoles because these games have beat em up or typical FF battle system mechanic that is just boring and retarded for core MMORPG games.

So fuck off. Better go tell others that Diablo III is possible on consoles too. I remember that shit too, it was funny while it lasts.

I think just SD Cards but could be wrong, pretty sure a HDD hasn’t been announced.

Sorry for the insult but there is just so much wrong in that comment that it is impossible to insult because MMORPG games require MACROS and WiiU won’t have them and will never have and that is the most important fact.

something like DCUO or Final Fantasy 14 with their silly gameplay can work but that is the best consoles can do.

Dragon Quest mmorpg??? Oh yeah. It is going to be a Dragon Quest that will play exactly like previous Dragon Quess games. It won’t have classic World Of warcraft mechanics that’s for sure.

Raided hardcore 5 days per week for 4 years in WoW. Guild leader for 2 years. Had 2 server first boss kills.

Every macro I ever used got replaced by in-game tools.

    Not. An. Issue.

Now shut up you stupid barky little fuck.

Add ons could also be a problem. I would love to see all of these hardcore raiders do a new, unlearned raid without any add on.

I dislike add ons very much. They cheapen the game in many cases. In wows case you either use them or you stink. It is what it is. I just don’t like it. But everyone has them, funny tho that the game is balanced for player with said adds.

Take em away and things would be a mess.

Something to think about in terms of console mmos.

I think the last console to get some proper mmo implementation will be wiiu ie. after sony (already has it) and ms as both of them are trying to integrate mmo and f2p systems in their online infrastructure.
Unless ninty drastically improves its online capabilities, mmos will only be a pipe dream on wiiu.
Not to mention exclusive mmos will most likely not exist on wiiu because ninty is not interested in giving cash to 3rd parties unlike sony and ms.

The biggest troll on here tells someone else to “go back to their cave” haha, should probably lay off your “hardcore MMO’s” and try to learn some social skills, you know you are going to need them when you eventually emerge from that cave/basement of your’s, assuming that you ever do that is.
“You never finished Dragon Soul Raid in Heroic and you will never finish it” hear him roar folks, such an accomplishment must not go untold, you really are the living breathing embodiment of every negative gamer stereotype aint yah? you are in for a massive shock when you have to function in the real world someday sunshine.

    OKAY.

Link me your character and show me your progress (by link i mean you need to show me your battle tag also). I can link mine without any problem with my progress. You can also ask Pat for my BattleTag too if you want, played Diablo with him casually. You can also see my progress in DIII.

If you won’t prove me, than you can F off with lies like that.

@Custard Ganet, oh shut up really. If you have nothing to say in the gaming related thread but Troll, no life, real world than you can f off too.
