Dragon’s Dogma to spawn sequels, hits 1 million shipped

Capcom Japan has announced that Dragon’s Dogma has shipped 1 million units worldwide.

In a press release, the publisher said Dragon’s Dogma is the 55th Capcom title to top the 1 million shipped mark; the amount shipped to retailers does not necessarily line up with sales, but it does indicate reasonable demand for the game.

Additionally, while it didn’t give numbers, Capcom noted that Dragon’s Dogma had set a first-week sales record in Japan as the best-selling new property launch in ten years.

As a result, the action RPG is to be developed into a major franchise.

Dragon’s Dogma released at the end of May on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It’s a single-player RPG in which players are joined by three AI companions, one of which can be hired by others to the benefit of both parties. It charted reasonably well in the May NPDs.

Dragon’s Dogma was a disaster in North America and Europe. The game sold 450K in Japan, while selling 190K in NA and 120K in Europe.

However, that 450K in Japan is enough to get sequels.

I have a PS3 promo sitting on my TV stand basically untouched. Hearing the many positive things about it from fellow peers, I might need to give it a whack.

@2 the game isn’t terrible. Its take on the battle system and RPGs as a whole is refreshing. I enjoyed playing it very much and while it may seem like a Skyrim clone, it isn’t. It’s like saying every MMORPG is a WoW clone which is false obviously. For one, the battle system is far better than that of Skyrim’s. The effect of day and night is also better than Skyrim. It has an online component which is also a plus. Give the game a chance :)

but it sold so badly =/

and 1m shipped doesn’t come close to covering their dev costs either. Why does a sequel to this exist?! O__o

Anyone claiming this game us a skyrim clone either hasn’t played it, or us just plain dumb. Skyrim wishes it had combat like dragons dogma! If you don’t like the game, cool. But don’t use baseless criticism. I think it’s a great game personally.

The advantage Dragon’s Dogma has over Skyrim is that you can do a freaking pull-up in the game.
