The 3DS eShop’s more generous allowances are acceptable to Team Meat, and the developer has shown interest in expanding to other Nintendo platforms, too.
Team Meat has had a troubled relationship with Nintendo; a WiiWare version of indie success story Super Meat Boy was on the cards but quietly faded away – apparently due to the service’s notoriously restrictive file size limitations.
“[WiiWare’s] 40MB is horrible, but [3DS’s] 2GB is reasonable,” Team Meat’s Tommy Refenes said in issue 72 of Nintendo Gamer, as reported by Nintendo Everything.
“Super Meat Boy would have been on WiiWare if we could have had just a few more megabytes of space – you can only compress stuff so much before you have to start cutting out huge parts of your game. Unfortunately, at that point, it just isn’t worth the time.”
Team Meat had planned for a retail release of Super Meat Boy on Wii but was scuppered when publishers showed little interest.
The independent team confirmed early last year that it was working on 3DS titles, but Refenes mentioned his hopes for other NIntendo releases, too.
“If we can in the future, we’d like our next game to be on Wii U as well as everything else,” he said.
Team Meat isn’t the first to pour scorn on WiiWare; Fez developer Polytron described WiiWare as “dismal” and not worth the time and effort.
