Sony has outlined new features coming in its next major firmware update for the PlayStation 3.
As outlined on the US PS Blog, firmware 3.70 includes some streamlining to the PS Plus subscriber-exclusive automatic download and cloud save features.
Subscribers will be able to nominate games for cloud saves, and their data will be automatically uploaded alongside their scheduled check for automatic downloads. Trophies will be synced at the same time, resulting in an all-in-one automated reconciliation, now renamed Automatic Update.
Sony will also finally implement a recommendation system allowing users to rate PlayStation Store content and send recommendations directly to PSN friends.
All video content streaming services like Netflix, Huli and VUDU will be piled into a new XMB category – TV/Video Services. As well as those you have installed, this menu item will help you locate, download and install services available in your territory, which will then be saved to a “My Channels” folder. PS Store videos will remain in the Video XMB category.
Sony will also update the PlayStation 3’s Blu-ray features, supporting 3D while accessing special features powered by Java, and adding decoding and streaming options.
Finally, support for the MPO 3D photo format will be added to the Photo Gallery.
No ETA on the update besides “soon”. Sony also mentioned a minor PSP firmware in the near future.
