Binary Domain to feature headset conversations with NPCs

Although Sega is working hard to make Binary Domain’s AI companions independent, you’ll have to talk to them to keep them sweet. Like, really talk to them.

“There are interactive elements utilising the headset where you essentially more or less engage in conversation,” producer Toshihiro Nagoshi told Gamespot through a translator.

“Like maybe there might be some back story that you can explore with the NPCs, that can essentially be done using the headset,” he explained.

Nagoshi said he wants to deliver the game’s story and drama in-game, though this voice command system as well as the relationships between player characters and NPCs.

“All the players will have a base level of behaviour, patterns of how they act, but depending on how you interact with them – say, you might betray them or they might betray you – they’ll have actual cause and effects in the game’s progression. So based on that based on that you can have some interesting immersion experiences in the game.”

Nagoshi said he hates games with “nagging” AI that needs to be babysat.

“We want to make sure the AI can basically stand on its own that, so that it doesn’t require babying,” he said.

Binary Domain is due on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in February.

I’m guessing it’ll be similar to Mass Effect 3‘s Kinect integration, players reciting set phrases to branch dialogue, as opposed to Sega finding the tech behind Seaman gathering dust and wondering what they can do with it.

Okay, that sounds awful. Off switch?

If it is actually done properly, wich it won’t, as in the AI actaully understands what you are saying in a natural voice, then it’s cool. But that’s impossible.
It’ll be the same nonsensical key phrase based voice regocnition straight out of the 90s that is still the worst possible way to interact with a computer.

Nice idea, but we all know its not going to work well… Plus voice recognition means that they will have to cut back on other areas too.
