Halo 4 announced, confirmed for holiday 2012

Microsoft’s formally announced Halo 4 at the end of its press conference, confirming it for a holiday 2012 launch.

The game, which sees the return of Master Chief and AI companion Cortana, is being made by 343 Industries, and is the start of a brand new trilogy.

The trailer showed Chief been waken from an articifical sleep, as shown at the end of Halo 3, with the ship they were in exploding and heading towards an even bigger ship.

And that’s your lot. Trailer’s below. More soon.

The most overrated series return (again)

and thats it? I mean, whats worse.. last year or this year?

except for Gears Of War 3 and multiplatform games like Lara Croft and… maybe Ghost Recon (for some people Mass Effect 2 kinect stuff).

Thats it? =\ Come on.

Oh wow… OH WOW. This was crazy! Just watched it on the xbox.com feed. Aw it looks crazy, Basically, John gets woken up after cortana finally calls on him and they are heading right towards that planet we see in the halo 3 legendary ending.

“Dawn of a new trilogy”… Best. News. Ever.

Yes…. i cannot wait for this, a new trilogy is on the way, nice very nice news indeed, having said that iam concern about it because now it doenst has bungie under their helm, but i remain confident that microsoft will put all the effort to their most influential and importat IP.

I dont get the hate, like we dont have god of war IV, Uncharted IV, and the likes, if people like those games why is that bad?, for me i hope the zeldas, the marios, the gods of wars, the uncharteds, the infamous, the fables, the elder scrolls, the halos, the dooms, the resident evils, the dead spaces, the final fantasy, etc you get my point, keep coming thats what we love and need.****shrugs***

@9

The more popular the game, and the speed at which it achieves that popularity, the more vocal people are disliking it.
Mario, Zelda etc get a free pass because they’ve built up the reputation over time. People hate Halo, Gears and CoD because they’re “new” blockbusters. The same will happen to Uncharted in the next five years.

@9 Well, IMO Halo franchise were never been impressive in any term, a mediocre but well advertised and uber hyped games. When I look at halo in comparison with gears of war for example, Gears is more visually impressive, more engaging gameplay and also very good in terms of sound and music. both have mediocre and forgettable story telling mechanics. and these titles moved thousands of xbox consoles than any other game on the platform.

I’m not saying Halo shouldn’t continue, I’m just saying I don’t find it exciting enough to care…

And @Erthazus I totally agree, I actually liked what I saw a lot.

#12 Well to tell you the truth i did love halo combat evolved for me the best in the series and halo reach in close second, and i did like everything in the game the setting, the good sci-fy story, the top notch gameplay, good colourful graphics and the impresive AI , that was really impresive for that time on consoles, all that made it for me a great overall package, and maybe it was because i did never played on PC before (till this day i dont),but for me it was like having the best of that platform on consoles, it made an everlasting impression on me, but i understand that is not everybody cup of tea and respect that, different strokes i suppose.

@9 the difference with every game you mention is you don’t see them every year.Cod and halo’s milking rating speed is beyond anything else. They could at least give 2-3 years while presenting something else in between
Like Erthazus said.No one’s hating Gears that much.clue: every 2 years

@11, I don’t really hate any game but I do dislike Gears of War & I really enjoy Halo, unlike you, not everybody judges a game by it’s looks =\
Just because you can’t see the appeal in it, doesn’t mean that nobody else does, I just can’t wrap my head around you self-centred elitists.

#15 But that was not the case with Halo one, halo 2 and 3 they did came with two years span between each other, if i dont recall wrong, the only ones that came with one after the other was Halo ODST and Halo reach, but this one is coming next year so is getting again the two year cicle, only that this time we get the HD version of combat evolved but that is good for the ones that have it and dont is a marketing strategy, i dont count it as a yearly iteration, therefore if you look at the series as a whole you see that the yearly output is no the general ruler.

The problem her lies where they said that the last game would be the last…and then they keep milking the series cause the producers are after money.

Personally I’ve never had any love for the Halo series ’cause it’s all bad (yes please flame me). Gears of War however is epic, and they’ve never ever said that they’re gonna end the series any time soon.

Just to show my point, I love the God of War series as well. But I’m pissed that they’re making a 4th game…why? ‘Cause the game ended with the 3rd, sure pre-quels might be OK etc >_>
But if they don’t find out how to make the 4th game EXTREMELY EPIC and unique, I’m not buying it.

#22

Talyis
06/06/11, 7:47 pm

@10 Uncharted didn’t get popular fast like Gears or Halo the first game sold below average and only hit the 80′s on metacritic, I thought first was awesome but the second game made it shine through and that’s when it started getting big!

#23

Christopher Jack
06/06/11, 7:52 pm

@21, That’s a lie, you heard Bungie weren’t making a new Halo game & they’re not, it’s 343 that are making it.

A side note: No one complain about Microsoft or Sony milking their franchises, the real culprits are Activision, EA Sports & Nintendo.

@15, To be fair, Halo’s MAIN games have at least 2 years between them, not entirely sure you want to count Halo: ODST or Halo: Wars which were more or less just spin-offs.

We aren’t sure if it is Kratos related or a new series of games using the same universe though that would be silly.

@23
Sorry, it came out the wrong way. The developers of the franchise and those who really love the series, said that they weren’t gonna make more games.

Then the producers come there and rapes the franchise ’cause they want money, and they toss the project unto a random game-studio.

#26

Phoenixblight
06/06/11, 7:59 pm

@25

Not a random game studio, Microsoft made a studio for the Halo franchise when Bungie announced Reach was going to be it for them. The studio has some key members of Bungie and developers that worked on the Halo series. Halo is what put the Xbox on the map of course they aren’t going to let it die. You make money off of it as long as you can until sales start to dip.

@18 don’t get stuck by a technicality. It’s still Halo be a sequel, prequel or spin off.plus they have still a long way to go with the series…a new trilogy. If Uncharted,GoW,infamous and the likes go that long people will also get bored of them.
Final fantasy is totally different since almost every new installment in the series is different with the previous one except some key elements and still the whole series has grown old.
Resident Evil fans are already in denial with the series dragging too far

#29

Christopher Jack

@25, This “random game-studio” consists of many former Bungie employees, no one ever officially said that Halo: 3 would be the last of Halo franchise, Bungie only said that they weren’t doing the sequel to it.

#28 come on man resident evil 4 is one of the greatest games of all time, if they had decide it to not continue with this franchise, we will not saw that game, and that really would be a shame, it was fantastic, i think the series needs to evolve like Resident evil 4 did previously, thats all ,and i think gamers will be happy, and so do i.

And i also believe if you have a great series that innovates from time to time and it have strong gameplay, story and graphics, the all time followers will love it and will demand more, thats the reason why so many people expect the new mario, zelda, Halo or god of war, but thats IMHO.

@ManuOtaku, “come on man resident evil 4 is one of the greatest games of all time”

it’s not.

Manu, i respect your opinion. But you should not say things like greatest series of all time and etc. I think you just love games and thats cool, but everyone see that you are a bit too much hyped for everything.

A lot of games that you listed here are not the best in it’s genres by far.

06/06/11, 8:17 pm

#31 you do realize what you said?Resident Evil 4 evolved a lot, some fans loved but still many others didn’t, still in the end it was a successful game.
So far there’s no real innovation with Zelda,God of War,CoD,Halo even Mario at times.Pretty much the same things over and over hence the milking

#37

I simply don’t understand why people who don’t like a game (or genre or series) to take the time to express this in a comment. Why not just say “Meh” and move right along to the next story.
I’m not a fan of Kinect. I don’t go on every fucking Kinect story saying “Yawn”, “Overrated”, “Blah” or whatever.

Grow up you lot.

#34 I understand your point, but i did said that it is one of the greatest of all time, not the greatest game of all time, thats different, i think it is part of the greatest game of all time, if you look at the top 50 list games voted by gamers and critics alike, it appears on many of them, so i think it can be catalogued as such IMHO

#39

xtigerz
06/06/11, 8:28 pm

@36 it gets praise because when halo came out it was the only worthy game to get on xbox. xbox was a gaming machine known for halo and thats it. xbox was never known to be a video game system offering different genres of games so all the praise went to halo.
Present day and xbox is beginning to look like its kinect or bust!

#40

ManuOtaku
06/06/11, 8:31 pm

#35 well if i look at resident evil as a series, it was the first game that tried something new and different, that was a very risk move, at least if you compare with the previous 2 games and code veronica, and it did set the precedent for all the upcoming games of the genre with the overall shoulders view, which they use since then, it was perfected and enhace, but it was used since then by the Third person Shooters.

#41

SuperCrazyLeprechaun

@39 they still gotta be doing something right to be still generating success 10 years down the line?

#42

xtigerz
06/06/11, 8:35 pm

@41 Yeah, the thing they are doing right is marketing the game like no other. Bottom line is that no matter the praise it gets halo is still a “MEH” FPS that has sold millions because its one of the only couple of franchises xbox has to offer with Gears of War being the other.

The only bonus I can see to this is that maybe Halo will stop being goddamn self-referential. Bungie had been “waving goodbye” for like 5 years, it was getting old. Someone needed to play them off.

As for Halo itself, sure it’s mediocre but it’s a party game. The fact that everyone else is playing it IS the game.

#44

DaMan
06/06/11, 8:44 pm

Halo games don’t really come out any more often than Mario or most of the other big name franchise entries. They basically release a game every three years, ODST was a glorified campaign dlc.

Final Fantasy was the same phallic swords / shitty plots / turn based mechanics for almost a decade. There were actually only a couple of games with any drastic changes to the formula.

There ‘s also nothing mediocre about it. Most people who say that either dislike it or never had any real experience with it’s omp.

“There ‘s also nothing mediocre about it. ”

Worst sci-fi dialogs and story.
Worst sci-fi characters. Even Mass Effect that is rip off from dozens of movies and books have more life in characters then in Halo games. Cortana is probably the only one that lives there and maybe in CGI trailers people live in videogames.
CRAPPY graphical engine since the first game. Especially on Xbox 360 Halo 3 and Halo ODST… It’s not even Sub-par 720…
Unreal, Tribes Rip Off but for console
Hillarious colours for spartan armor… Need more pink in the end.

I find this mediocre.

#46

KL
06/06/11, 8:58 pm

@40 and look how Resident evil turned out now.they innovated with 4 but they went too far with 5 and ruined the whole series
there won’t be innovation out of Cod,Halo and GoW.Expect the same things and if they keep releasing them at this rate even more people will get bored of them eventually than of those that already are.
Nintendo knows what they’re doing with Zelda even though the series haven’t evolved much. They leave a huge gap in between to have fans reminisce the experience.

#47

DaMan
06/06/11, 9:00 pm

@Erthazus There.. shouldn’t be any ‘life’ in characters like Chief or Cortana, for the reason that they’re not human in any possible way. Chief is from the same category as Lara Croft, james Bond or other godlike protagonists.

The dialogue is very competent, and of the better examples in videogame industry.

The engine was very impressive since the first game, there’s a lot happening, the original was quite a showcase for 2001, and even made use of shader capabilities.

Tribes rip-off yes, not Unreal in any way, unless you have zero skills and play FFA on a shitty map like Countdown.

Appreciate your opinion, we just happen to disagree.

Pure awesome.

For me Halo is far and away the best shooter series ever made. The controls and AI are unmatched. Even at it’s weakest (Halo 2) it’s still head and shoulders above any other shooter.

Reach has sold over 8 million so far. I’m betting this will top 10 million.

“There ‘s also nothing mediocre about it. Most people who say that either dislike it or never had any real experience with it’s omp.”

Or they played games on non-MS systems, particularly contemporaries of Halo 1 and 2 before multiplayer shooters all went console.

Don’t get me wrong, I like me some Halo. I do disagree with Erthazus- Halo’s story is nowhere near as bad as most other shooters, at least in its background. Bungie did their part to prop their world up, even if the central character is (almost literally) a joke.

But I’m not going to pretend they would still be making Halo games if Bungie hadn’t agreed to be MS’s flagship. The insane popularity is bought and paid for through the marketing. And like I said, it’s a party game/cultural buzzword. If Bungie decided to make its own unofficial “Halo 4″ and couldn’t use the name at all or reference it in ads because MS owns the rights, it would be a flop.

#50

DaMan
06/06/11, 9:18 pm

@hitnrun it’s a .. multiplayer centric one yes. I won’t deny the campaigns were more of a tacked on not that great done bonus after CE. Which is a direct outcome of emphasis on online.

Well, this is actually a no brainer that something like MS and a brand helps gain popularity, which is true for any major franchise. Since we can only talk theoretically because Bungie did n’t do that on their own, and can’t, I happen to disagree for the reason that I ‘m certain the game would be constantly in the top 20, just not that high. see, I play it almost daily and find it fun, I also played Tribes, CS and most of the omp since the very late 90s. Since this is a videogame, i find it possible that people might find it both amazing and average fun wise anyway, despite what they played. Of course you always have an army of kids, but they mostly also happen to disappear from matchmaking after a few months.
