Homefront 2 single-player will be longer if it can be balanced with multiplayer, says Kaos

Kaos GM David Votypka has said the firm would consider making the single-player portion of Homefront 2 a bit longer than the current five-hour campaign, providing it doesn’t take away from the multiplayer component.

Speaking with CVG, Votypka said doing so though, would require a bit more balancing on the team’s part to make sure it didn’t take away from the multiplayer component – currently considered the best part of the current Homefront.

“It’s a balance really. So if we were doing a single-player only game – and there are some of those out there of course – then you’re talking maybe a 20-hour single-player campaign,” said Votypka.

“I think going forward we’d certainly work on extending it a few hours, but going past the 10-hour mark and doing a category-leader multiplayer game… you just have to balance your development resources there. I think the main thing is do people feel that they got enjoyment out of the single-player campaign and enough of it? So we’ll see how it comes out and what the gaming audience has to say about it.

“We also want to focus on a large-scale multiplayer game and that you get a lot of hours play out of that as well – because that’s infinitely more re-playable than single-player anyway and you’re going to spend the bulk of your time there. So we really want to make sure that’s robust and deep.”

Homefront is out in the US now, and hits the UK on Friday. You can get a list of review scores via our round-up, and find out why stock in THQ dropped following the game’s scores through here and Brenna’s feature.

Wow, they are SO confident a sequel will get made? Hey, how about first focusing in NOT making it generic, THEN worry about the campaign length.

But is it really so generic? Compared to the COD and MOH games they ARE kinda trying something new. The concept of the US being attacked and dominated by another country, it’s something new.

Just release the game without multiplayer like Arkham City! For Multiplaye I have Counter-Strike or Battlefield!

@3 Agree. Take Battlefield 3 for example. It looks fantastic and the MP will likely be great, but set in the Middle East and you are a US soldier. They must of pondered for hours about that one. Maybe Alakratt was talking more generic purely in gameplay terms.

@3 hey mate….ermmm… played MW2? no?….errr, no worries.

Forseeable future states we’ll see many many many many many for FPS coming out alot like COD or *insert title here* because those dumbass gamers (such as myself) bought all the other COD titles making them the best selling game of all time, so its only logical other devs will get in on the action.

I mean if i were CEO for a game dev i fucking would… you’d be crazy not to right?

But i tell you what though… its only gonna saturate the market with shit like this.

COD… its time to fuck off and die.. and bring your COD clones with you.

@3 That’s funny. I distinctly recall the US being attacked and dominated by another country in another recent first person shooter…

What was it called again..?

Oh, right! Modern Warfare 2!

It’s another “Bad Dudes versus the USA” first person shooter. It’s a utterly generic and tired idea, no matter how you look at it.

For me a game like this really needs a 8-10 SP mode for me to even look at it, if it has a MP component.

Also, anyone who gets HF1, I really want to know what stands out in the MP side of the game. What differentiates it from other games in this genre? Other than Maps, weapons, class, etc…what have they introduced that is so revolutionary in the MP side of the game that blows all the other games of this type out of the water. I hear quite a bit of self bolstering but have seen very little in the way of substance yet. If HF has something revolutionary on the MP side other than the rinse and repeat of other games of this type then I will look at it again.

Take out the best bit? There’s blue sky outside the box thinking for you. THQ will probably be all over that idea mind.

@7, I looked at the first 10 mins of the game & the story & setting are perfect, it just hasn’t been executed all that well in terms of the basic objectives & the AI, so it maybe worth a single play through just for the story, the MP looks great but nothing new.

So 8 Map Packs in MP with only 2 modes Ground control and Team DM? You get to drive an asst of vehicles, and customize your weapons with BP and have team centric Challenges. This sounds like Quake Wars or Battlefield 2142, also I am hearing the the 8 MP maps look very similar. So is it just doesn’t sound as revolutionary as they are making it out to be!

@11
I don’t think it’s revolutionary – more a couple of nice ideas tacked on to a sound MP engine. I’d like to try it as I quite enjoyed Frontlines, but full price at launch – with no demo? If they’ve produced a truck load of copies and they don’t sell due to the reviews then it could well be discount-tastic before you know it.

@10 All I’ve seen is a pretentious and overly try-hard approach to the plot they’re trying to convey. They could have made a genuinely thoughtful story out of this, but no, they had to go the ham-fisted root instead.

Thanks, I was starting to feel like I had judged this too harshly, so many Voices are singing High praises, but me thinks they have been paid!

Am I the only one that thinks it should be the other way around??? It seems single player is only an after thought these days. A side serving. I just think single player should always be the main course, if they want a truly excellent multiplayer element then why not do the whole game that way like MAG for instance.

fuck multiplayer thats the problems with games like call of duty homefront should have had a crappy mp that was somewhat fun and an epic sp that sold the game it sucks that devs are going with the mainstream unemployed black guy who sits their playing mp cause he has nothing else to do or the 12 yearold little kid who is an asshole BECAUSE NO ONE REALIZES MP IS JUST A SIDE DISH TO THE FUCKING GAME ITS ALL ABOUT THE STORY NO STORY NOT A GOOD GAME DISCUSSION OVER

We dont need longer campaign, KAOS (because it looks like will be boring if more than 5 hours). Better gameplay is what we need! Why dont you throw the multiplayer aspect into single player! Open and large map that need to be captured (consider it as Korean supply camp like Freedom Fighter did), replace the actual people with Korean Army bot, story between the map to motivate us going forward(or some short scripted corridor shooter to tell it, but the main gameplay still within the large open map). Yeah, its difficult to script an AI that aware enough with that kind of map, but Crysis can do it, even STALKER execute it nicely (at least in Call of Pripyat). KAOS, please listen to us!

SPOILER……………..ok so I just beat the single player and I WANT MORE OF THIS. and to everyone that says this game is like mw2, IT”S NOT EVEN CLOSE. well if all your hear is the states being invaded and the us fighting back yea it sound like the same game but in homefront korea already has control of the majority of the states. up until the last mission your just part of this small resistance unit thats living behind enemy lines and trying to weaken the korean to free your country but unfortunately your plan fucks up and you get the majority of citizen who are living in korean occupied Colorado killed. its not until the last mission that you get to fight with the american army, even then the army has become so small and weak that I’m assuming in the sequel it wont be a cake walk for the army to take back the us. altogether, great fuckin game and i can’t wait for the sequel keep it up kaos, finally having fun with an fps again. The multiplayer is wicked aswell, not quite as realistic as cod and bad company but still lots of fun and a good change from those 2 games.

How is it generic? Should the devs just make it exactly like CoD where there are people jumping off buildings, taking out armies and just demolishing entire civilizations all by yourself. Sorry but Homefront is its own game and is completely unique in game mechanics and in story development. Name another game where north and south Korea ally with each other and take down the US… that’s because it’s never happened before! Stop trolling please and thank you.

@28: Wow, are you serious? Just because it’s North Korea doesn’t mean it’s unique. You had the same story in MW2. But with Russia.

How ignorant are you anyway? It’s as Call of Duty as it gets. Nothing unique about it. Devs are talking about your main character just being another man, but you still kill thousands of people singlehandedly.
