Report – GT5 install takes 50 minutes, 6.4Gb on HDD [Update]

GT5

This may not end well.

According to what is probably the biggest forum post on the game ever on GTPlanet from Amar212, the install for Gran Turismo 5 will take over 50 minutes to complete.

Amar claims his install was done in 40 minutes, though.

Not only that, the install will take up a massive 6.4Gb on your hard drive.

You may remember AmarĀ provided these subtle hints to the game last April before its official unveil at E3 two months later.

There’s more on it here. If you want to see the ultimate GT5 info wank, hit that link.

Gran Turismo 5 launches worldwide on Wednesday for PlayStation 3. Watch Kevin Butler steal the game’s cover car, the Mercedes SLS AMG, here.

Thanks, TSA.

Update: As half the internet is screaming out, the bigĀ install is optional.

The mandatory install will only be 256Mb, as pointed out by a Kazunori Yamauchi tweet from August. The 6.4 Gb is most likely for the optional install.

Update 2: SCEE’s just sent VG247 a statement on the matter. It’s in full below.

“GT5 gives users the option of an install. This makes loading times throughout much faster but is not a requirement when first playing.

If users choose not to install the data straight away it will do it in stages as news areas, tracks etc are accessed during normal game play.”

some people saying that install is only 40 minutes and there is a smaller install with 256 MB.

but that is a massacre.

Thought I heard the install was not mandatory. The install would only make the game load faster and run slightly smoother. Don’t have the source for that though.

The install is not mandatory no.

Oof. Is there a nice loading screen though? SC2 gave the complete backstory of SC1, with voice over and art work.

It’s optional. There is a mandatory install as well but it’s only something like 256MB.

“Game gently warns that “Install of game data can take up to 50 minutes”
v
“It took 40 minutes”
v
“the install for Gran Turismo 5 will take over 50 minutes to complete.”

I’m sorry, but I don’t follow your logic.

Ta, dude.

Syrok – I’ve fixed it up. Should make a bit more sense now.

Blimey, why so slow for 6gb? Is that just a standard ‘worst case scenario’ disclaimer?

I’ve emailed Sony, so I should hopefully hear back from them shortly.

Hey, Johnny Cullen, thanks for the update.

The “this might not end well” is a bit over the top though, and doesn’t do much for the article ;) Also, the optional install has varying options, with one to install 6.4GB all at once, and then install things as you play, or go for the full 10GB install in one fell swoop.

Nonsense, Johnny’s at least 8-bit.

Edit: Ha ha! What happened to your ‘indignant/rude’ version of that post, man? :-D

Why does a 6Gb install on my 360 take 5 mins and 6Gb install on a PS3 take 50?

#25

tha_con
19/11/10, 2:57 pm

Blerk – Well, I still feel it’s a bit amateur to write an article centered around here-say and a lack of facts, especially with the tone this one has. That said, I didn’t think it was right to say what I said :)

Mike – That is probably due to disc speed differences between the two, and the different technologies used to uncompress the data and install it.

Could complete a game in that time. :P

@24
A 360 install is a direct read and install of the ISO – so no real seeking require, just a straight read off. (5 minutes is a little low even assuming full speed across the 6GB which is not the case). A PS3 install would be taking off the BR which would be set up for optimal disc performance and plonking selected data on the HD which would have different set up requirements.

That and the fact that for general reading and seeking the 360 drive is just better. Bluray has better capacity and a consistent read rate across the disc – which could be useful in some circumstances. Bluray is a dog with seeking though – so lots of small files = Mr Slow.

@25, that’s all well and good and commendable, but you ruined my joke! :-D

@24 Also probably the same reason updates, downloads and other installations are quicker on the 360 too. I think Microsoft being a software company, and having many years of experience with Software makes it run that bit smoother. Not to say Sony’s software is bad, but they were/are mainly a hardware focused company.

“If users choose not to install the data straight away it will do it in stages as new areas, tracks etc are accessed during normal game play.”

That’s cool. I wonder why more games don’t do that?

Whys this news? Is it an issue? Can people not wait 50 minutes? It was mentioned months ago that a large install would be required. Make a brew and chill people.

If this is as good as everyone is expecting I think Sony will sell one more PS3 very soon.

But then I have to buy Uncharted 2 and LittleBig Planet and ..ah fuck.

Do you actually need kidneys to live?

who cares, go cry your tears over so many other shitty games out there that require 4+ gbs too, nothing to see there. People should be mad about the copy protected saves, now that is such a lazy dev. move it’s maddening.

^ Exactly dude.

This game stretches itself out, kicks it’s feet up, grabs a brew and makes itself fucking comfortable as hell taking up as much space as it wants cause it’s a fucking beast and it owns the entire genre, and it knows it..
