Move sells 1 million in NA, production upped to meet demand

Move sold over 1 million units in its first month on sale in North America, SCEA’s confirmed.
The company’s said that demand is outstripping supply, and production levels have now been increased.
“We had to go back and increase production twice, we’re absolutely maxed out right now,” SCEA’s Jack Tretton told Reuters.
SCEA marketing boss Peter Dille confirmed last night that Sony is flying in replenishment shipments as “many retailers” have sold out.
Arcadia Research analyst John Taylor, however, retorted that the unit has not sold out in most locations, but didn’t dispute Dille’s call.
Taylor’s analysis indicated “several hundred thousand” units have been bought so far.
Move launched on September 19 in the US with its camera priced at $39.99 and its motion controller wand at $49.99.
The motion controller’s American effort was beaten in Europe, where it moved more than 1.5 million units in its first month.

2.5 mil units shipped in a month, not bad, not bad at all, just curious as to whether or not that includes the sub-controller thing.

How about this then: JT caught in lie again?

I’m kind of surprised they’ve sold any – are they even advertising it? The shops seem to be full of Kinect stuff and that’s not even out yet.

@3
I’ve seen quite a few TV adverts for Move in the UK. Like you say, Kinect takes up about 10 times as much shelf space in stores though.

Is Move being sold at a loss? In other words, is Sony expecting Move to bring a serious boost to software sales?

@6 I doubt it. Looking at the controller price and the tec involved I’m sure they make a small profit on the bundle and a decent profit on the separate controllers.
So, while I personally think Move will be a modest success as a peripheral rather than shift lots of people to Sony, I think it’s gonna be a nice profit generator, with all aspects from hardware to software giving a nice return on profit.
As an aside adding this to SCEE’s 1.5 means that, before the holidays, Move has shifted 2.5 million units and will see plenty more through November and December… I guess it’s going to do okay.
The actual install base must be a fair bit smaller though, as many people – including me – seem to be buying extra controllers and the like.

@7, they often have some things on there that look very like Move controllers, though!

You know, I go to game stores a lot where I live in America. I also always visit the electronics section in larger department stores and anywhere else really you can buy games here. I have never ever seen Move sold out. For that matter the shelves are stocked. My friend who works at Gamestop has sold 1 whole controller since launch (not counting launch day) during his shifts…
… normally I don’t really want to say a company is lying but frankly I don’t believe it. And they supposedly sold even more in Europe? Are you guys actually seeing evidence of this?

On the various UK web sites that I visit to look for gaming articles they are “out of stock” when it comes to the starter pack and the separate move controller.
The same goes for bigger supermarkets in Denmark where they have set up demo booths for it. So I’m pretty convinced it’s doing quite well here in Europe (and they’ve only spend 750,000 Euro on the marketing campaign).
They shold have done more in stocking up the various places though, because when Kinect enters the scene people will buy in to the myth about the new “Apple” device and how new and revolutionary it is (‘read your emotions’, LOL -’Voice Control’, lame), and Move’s days might be numbered.
What the hell is it with Sony and marketing? Move is clearly the superiour device motionwise but they don’t want to push it!
As for the US market – well that’s sounds like a typical report from the western front; Microsoft almost practically owns the gaming stores over there and that’s not going to change this generation. With 500 million Dollars in marketing budget and Oprah on board, the gathered American population will follow them like hungry dogs.

It seems a complete lie… I’m basing this on word of mouth and general interest – there hasn’t been any in this or in Kinect.

This number shipped not sold thing, applies to consoles in Sony’s case, but surely Move is an accessory, not a console? Aren’t they treated differently?

No difference CJ, it’s whatever the companies choose to report, in this case sold to retailer (shipped).
