QuakeCon keynote liveblog is go – No DOOM 4, Arkane acquired, next-gen nowhere in sight

Bethesda’s used it QuakeCon 2010 keynote to announce an acquisition of BioShock 2 developer Arkane Studios and its “unannounced game” tonight, but failed to show off the game everyone wanted to see – DOOM 4.

French developer Arkane was founded in 1999, and helped 2K Marin with Bioshock 2 “design, animation, and art”.

RAGE has also been confirmed for iPhone, and was shown running at 60fps. You can watch a video of it on Kotaku. A first iPhone version will release this year, with another to follow when the PC and console versions release in 2011.

id dev legend John Carmack did admit, though, that RAGE wasn’t even on the “home straight” yet, but that most of the shooter’s content had been fixed.

Carmack went on to say that current gen consoles aren’t going to change any time soon, admitting that Microsoft and Sony haven’t told the company anything about their next-gen plans.

id boss Todd Hollenshead also told Eurogamer during the presentation that id Tech 5 is no longer available for license.

“Something neat”

Carmack said on Twitter earlier in the day that we should get something good from the session:

“I’m showing something neat and unannounced at quakecon tomorrow. Deciding if I should leave it be or sneak a little more code in…”

Any promise of a DOOM 4 were dashed, however. Despite id boss Todd Hollenshead telling VG247 at last year’s QuakeCon to expect first info on the shooter at this year’s event, he said this evening that nothing on the shooter is to be shown.

It was revealed the day before by Carmack that the game will take less time to develop than RAGE, which is currently scheduled for a 2011 release.

After not having much success licensing id Tech 4, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were announcing one or more games from other developers using id Tech 5. Try and bolster some better support out of the gate.

I don’t think id are as bothered about licensing out their engines as they have done in the past, unless Bethesda/Zenimax are going to set up their own offices to support/sell the engine. Which would be a half decent idea tbh.

@4 There is no hardware for ID Tech 5 engine and they didn’t even released a game in ID Tech 4.

We are speaking of John freaking Carmack here. A Software Engineer. It might be Doom 4 or it way be simply something coding or tech related that is interesting from a technology perspective rather then the usual press “Hurr Durr AAA Title or not interesting Hurr”

I liked Carmack speach for personal reasons, but… No DOOM 4?

For F… Sake. I understand that Zenimax don’t want to overshadow RAGE with Doom 4, but for F sake…. This is QUAKECON. QUAKECON is only one year where ID software fans are gathering together.
