Assassin’s Creed II “Complete Edition” spotted at UK retail

asscreed2comed

According to listings on three different UK retail sites, Ubisoft’s set to release Assassin’s Creed II: Complete Edition on June 4.

What makes it “complete” is that it contains both bits of DLC released for it  along with the Templar locations of Palazzo Medici, Santa Maria del Frari, and the Arsenal Shipyard – which were included with the Limited Edition.

You can see it for yourself over on Play, ShopTo and Amazon UK.

We’ve looked on a couple of US sites to see if it’s listed there as well, but sadly, it isn’t, so we’ll shoot Ubi off a mail and see if anyone responds.

Thanks, Joystiq.

Who’s more evil at the moment? Ubisoft or Activision? I’m not sure I can choose between the two…

Activision are straight up evil. Ubisoft are just jerks.

maybe GOTY edition it should be called…so many people won’t feel robbed. Of course if they bought it at full price and then the DLC. :)

This grates on me. Mostly because I thoroughly enjoyed the hell out of the game. I found it fantastic from start to finish, had a great time. But when you get to a certain point in the story, and the game sudddenly stops you in your tracks and one of the characters actually jumps up and says out loud “HEY! Hey you, the gamer! We’re going to skip the next couple of chapters and jump straight to the end of this thing. Hope you don’t mind! Maybe you can check them out some other time! LOL!”* you just know you’ve found where the inevitable DLC is going to slot in, and that you’ve got an incomplete product in your hands. To anyone who played the game, reaching that moment, it was a massive slap in the face if you were getting into the story, blatantly obvious that the game was an incomplete product, that that gap in the proceedings was not so much “reserved” for future content as “intentionally left out so we can charge customers again if they want to actually get the full thing.”

There’s good DLC (see GTA: The Lost and the Damned, pretty much a whole new game), there’s bad DLC (yay my gun’s a different colour!), and then there’s this, downright diabolical DLC, content that is not so much “additional” as “left out with an agenda”.

That’s not to say the DLC itself was necessarily bad as such… it was actually rather enjoyable, and certainly added to the game. Which you’d expect it to, given that it was actually already part of the game to start with and just snipped out and pushed aside to be sold seperately in the guise of all-new expanded content. Sure, some additional development time may have gone into the missing chapters after the game’s release, I guess, but the way it was handled was just massively insulting to anyone who was playing through and enjoying the game proper.

Imagine if this was done with other formats of media. DLC should be the equivalent of the extra features and extended versions of films that you get on DVD. But this is like taking a 2 hour film, and then editing out the bits at the end so you only have the first hour and a half and then the last ten minutes, then making the missing twenty minutes available three months later… for a price. Or selling chapters 1 to 15 and 20 of a novel, then half a year later releasing chapters 16 to 19. Ridiculous!

Utterly, utterly diabolical Ubisoftness. Great game, but absolutely shamelessly greedy sales strategy, not so much milking the thing as strip-mining it.

* The moment in question made even more grating by being delivered by none other than that annoying Danny Wallace twat! Talk about adding insult to injury!

Game of the Year Edition; Ultimate Edition; Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Edition: any of these would have been a better substitute.

ACII is the new Lord of the Rings. Buy it now or wait for the extended edition later on.

No PC version huh? Not enough servers to run them off of or something?
