New Bungie IP to be an action RPG, suggests job listing

It looks like the “next big action game universe” Bungie is currently building with Activision might just be an action RPG.
The studio is looking for a writing lead for the storyline of the new title, according to a job listing on its website, with the developer especially keen on writers who provide a “branching or non-linear narrative experience”.
On that nugget of info alone, Gamespot suggests it could be an action RPG in a similar form like Mass Effect 2 or Deus Ex.
The developer announced last week it had signed a ten-year deal with Activision for full publishing and distribution rights to the new IP: Bungie will maintain full control on the series.
Get everything from the deal’s announcement from last week here.
In the meantime, the studio’s currently focusing on Halo: Reach, which launched its multiplayer beta earlier tonight.

Thats actually interesting. If they will make something like Deus Ex 1 (that is not going to happen anyway) i will go apeshit.
Well, thats interesting. I love Action RPG games. Maybe i should give them some chances. Maybe.

i hope it’s not xbox 360 exclusive like Halo, because then I won’t be able to play it… I don’t own a 360…

If it turns out to be something similar to ME2, then they’ve got me. Hell, it’s RPG.

Branching and/or non-linear doesn’t necessarily equal RPG territory. Bungie’s own Marathon Infinity had you skipping around through time, replaying bits and visiting areas in any number of sequences depending on your playthrough, each leading to one of I think four endings. I for one would be amped to see them revisit that particular gameplay style.

“Branching and/or non-linear doesn’t necessarily equal RPG territory.”
No, but level based character progression, statistical improvement of stats and talent trees certainly does.

Hmm… last week it was all multiplayer, now it’s branching and non-linear. I wonder just where they’re going with this?

@ 9: I’m confused, where in Bungie’s job listing does it mention any of those things?
@ 8: ME2 is definitely an RPG, albeit a very streamlined one. I’d have preferred to have had KOTOR-esque depth to inventory and party management, but it’s still an RPG by definition.

@8 ME2 is RPG. Please. Start.
But seriously, it falls within that category, albeit not the most RPG-esque kind of game, I’ll give you that.

@8 ME2 is more of an RPG than any other “RPG” game. It is more true to the term “Role-playing” as you feel more like playing a character and your different choices help you shape your world.
Just because it doesnt have stat tracking and loads of item management and in depth upgrading doesnt mean its not an RPG. None of that stuff fits in with the definition of role playing, and im glad that gaming has evolved beyond the need for all that stuff. Hopefully JRPG’s evolve in the same way too but that wont happen for a very very long time as they dont like to innovate or change from the norm too much.
Back on topic, i think an action-rpg would be great for bungie, im really excited to see what they can come up with. Though i dont think many of their employess have much if any experience with making an RPG so i think it could be a while before we see anything
