Rebellion calls AvP a “critical success” in spite of a few “totally shit” reviews, in talks for a sequel

(We’re two-for-two for stories with “shit” playing a primary role in the headline tonight. We get a cookie now, right?)

The reviews are in, and Rebellion’s reinvention of the Alien vs. Predator franchise is… decent? Completely awful? Well, it depends on who you ask.

Rebellion, however, hasn’t let that dampen its spirits. Also keep in mind that money talks. And from what the developer told, er, Develop, money’s voice – in conjunction with a chorus of “mostly good” reviews – is a great deal louder than a few “totally shit” reviews.

“We’re delighted to see the game shoot to the top of the UK charts,” said company co-founder and CEO Jason Kingsley. “We wanted Aliens Versus Predator to be a critical success as well as a commercial success, which we think we have achieved.”

“We’re also in discussions with Sega about ongoing support for AvP, and also about a sequel to the game,” he noted.

On that “critical success” bit, he elaborated:

“The reviews have been mostly good. We’ve had three totally shit reviews by some Americans, which is a bit odd. Some of them were inexcusably bad.”

“If you discount those poor reviews AvP is averaging high for us.”

“Obviously in the past we’ve had constraints put on us, meaning we’ve released games that we wanted to spend a bit more time on, which have critically been a bit underwhelming. That’s always a shame.”

*cough*Rogue Warrior*cough*

“With Rogue Warrior, we did the best we could in the timeframe, and I doubt anyone could do any better given the circumstance,” he explained.

Awww. No Rogue Warrior 2, then?

The game has a metacritics score of 65-67, no matter how Rebellion what to spin it, its a critical failure.

Ofcourse their other games scored even lower so maybe by their extremely low standards it is a success…

I’m seeing very few people on the forums who are as pleased with the game as most of the reviewers seem to be. Bizarre.

Metacritic rating of 65 makes the balance of reviews distinctly average. No mention of that number in what’s another typically Rebellion bullshit press release?

@Gedaki.

Yeah, Rogue Warrior and Shellshock both average 25-30 on Metacritic, which by comparision does make AvP a critical smash.

They might be trumpeting release week sales, but let’s see how it does even in the medium term.

The 1UP review was bobbins though, I can understand them being bitter about that.

@ 6

That’s Because Everyone Who Loves The Game Is Playing & Not Chatting In Forums, It’s Common Sense Really.

All You People Who Go By Reviews Are Sheep, The Rest Of You Guys Just Got Your Ass Handed To You In The Demo & Are Now Bitter So You Hate On The Game.. I Think That’s Just Hilarious. ;)
