Ubisoft explains DRM for ACII on PC and loss of internet connection

Yesterday, a report from PC Gamer surfaced stating that since an internet connection’s required to play Assassin’s Creed II on PC, should you lose your internet connection while playing, all progress would be lost and you would be taken back to the menu screen.

Ubisoft says that’s not the case.

Speaking with ArsTechnica, a Ubisoft representative explained to the site what would happen to players should they get dropped from their connection, and this applies to all PC games from Ubisoft – not just Assassin’s Creed II.

“As long as you do not quit the game, the game will continue to try to reconnect for an unlimited time,” said the rep. “Once the game is able to reconnect, you will immediately be returned to your game.

“Where exactly you are reconnected in the game may differ from title to title. Settlers 7 reconnects at the exact point where the connection was lost, AC2 reconnects you at the last checkpoint – not the last auto save, as indicated yesterday.

“There are many checkpoints, so you’re back to the point where you got disconnected in no time.”

The only time you will lose progress is when you are disconnected for a lengthy amount of time, and once back up, you start back at the last checkpoint.

If you are only cutoff for a few seconds, the game pauses itself and then resumes once you are reconnected. Nothing at all happens if your connection slows.

“Our online services platform will require a maximum of 50kbps of available bandwidth,” said the rep, “so even with the slowest connection, gameplay won’t be affected.”

Ars goes on to explain that members the armed forces may have a hard time playing on their laptops, those flying will have to pay for on-flight Internet, and if your internet goes out completely while playing – you can’t play and will lose progress.

Assassin’s Creed II lands on PC March 5 and 16 in the UK and US, respectively.

LOL, if the DRM needs to be that brutal, just ditch the PC version or go for a Cloud exclusive service.

I can’t see too many PC users finding this explanation particularly comforting, PC gaming is a right mess outside of Steam, maybe the cloud can fix it?

They’re applying some heavy spin. Going back to your last checkpoint is pretty much the same as loosing unsaved progress.
Saying checkpoints are frequent is simply no exuse what so ever.
The point still stands: you are tied to your internet connection and the stability of Ubisofts servers for your gameplay experience.
It’s a bullshit system that punishes it’s loyal costumers.

people wonder why pc gamers hate consoles. people wonder why people hate cooperations. NO wonder Ubisoft is going bankuprt and they will continue to bankuprt. Why less and less people like them. Ubisoft is a company that never respected pc gamers in the first place.

I am going to say this agin If ever pc gaming dies like so meny gaming media wants. With the pre mature death of pc gaming. The whole entire gaming industry will come crashing on you game devs. More than 11 000 game devs will lose their jobs.

    my words are solid!

I am losing more and more respect for the gaming Industry. This is the biggest joke ever!

Ubisoft should support its customers, or be prepared to lose them.
The piracy is YOUR problem, not that of the paying players.
You cross the line at the stage that your prevention methods ruin the experience of ONE buyer of your game being disadvantaged, compared to the experience of someone that ripped it off. >:( Going about things entirely the wrong way.

yes, thk f**k for them offering us an explanation. nooot! wow. this is insane. u know, i buy original games because they r easier to install, play and patch so that’s why i got ac1. with them doing this to ac2 i’m definitely not going to buy it. this time the pirated version will be easier to install and play..

“people wonder why pc gamers hate consoles. ”

no we dont … YOU and a few fanatics hate consoles , the rest of the actual “people” couldnt care less about your view , enjoy console gaming , or just got a preference for pc .

You are but a minority of extreme haters .

Consoles hardly got a hand in the matter here . You screw yourself over by pirating over and over games , while an as pirated console market still managed to sell massively .

Of course piracy is too convenient and an invisible culprit , but bottom line is despite games costing less on pc , and actually working and awesome digital distribution systemes … “th roxor pc gamers” still massively pirate their title . And as a result the honest and loyal customers are getting further screwed .

Anyway you’re a troll and a broken record , so i’ll try not to follow our example too much .

You lost respect for Sony ? I doubt you really had any to begin with . How the hell did sony harmed your beloved pc anyway ? They didnt “steal” PC based studios and franchises like microsoft did with Alan Wake , Halo and “molyneux”.

They kept published their very much “console like” games , especially in genre not even properly represented on PC , like hack and slash , and platform .

Next thing we know , you are going to pretend that consoles stole fighting games from pc too and gives cancer…

Wondered when this would come about, always thought that this type of DRM would be out earlier. BUt, when one company does it, others will follow.

When the PC games industry has been reduced to pay as you play systems whilst being online 100% of the time and they think they have beaten piracy they’ll turn to a new target. And, in my opinion, that new target will be Second hand console games, so all the console people will be forced to pay for a new game, all the time.

You wish . I have no love for ubisoft , but it’s often the console that bailed them out . Assassin creed actually originated on console , it was even supposed to be a ps3 exclusive .

Most of splinter cell’s success was on console .
And while many people grew tired of rainbow six games on pc … it was on console and with ghost recon that they renewed interest for it .

Rayman’s biggest successes were on console .
And prince of persia was reborn on consoles too , after quite a few failed reboot (like the episodic 3d prince) .

In fact besides Farcry , i dont remember anything major on PC from ubisoft . So my guess is , as sad as it would be for their actual fans , Ubisoft would easily thrive without pc .

And please try to use less broken english in your insults , i know you’re supposed to look silly , but that’s beyond comedy and bordeline pathetic now
