Rumor: Devs already working on “new Nintendo platform”

Videogamer reckons it’s heard that developers are already working on a “new Nintendo platform” ahead of a possible announcement by Nintendo at GDC.

“Just heard a rumor that you may be interested in, Nintendo are going to announce a new platform at GDC,” an employee at a major international publisher told the site. “Some devs have already started work on it.”

No specifics were given on whether the rumored platform was a handheld or a console, or if Nintendo planned to announce it at GDC or not – but he was sure the new hardware existed.

Rumors have been in abundance regarding a new platform or a platform update for a while now.

Earlier in the month, Michael Pachter predicted that an HD version of Wii would hit this year, and recently Iwata denied stating that a new DS with “highly detailed graphics” and a motion sensor was being planned.

As far as reveals go, Nintendo has only confirmed that at E3 this year, the new Zelda will be revealed, and as far as a new hardware announcement is concerned – the company attributed the report to be nothing more than “rumors and speculation”.

Please don’t be a Wii HD…I’d hate to see Pachter actually make an accurate prediction.

I wonder if this time they actually make a console that isn’t for low end gaming. It would be great if they continued the Wii for the low-end market and then make an Uber machine that puts the ps3 and 360 to shame.

If they will suddenly announce HD console then they are making a big mistake. Because not Nvidia or ATI created Next Generation videocards. Its more of the same but with more power. + Nintendo don’t have gamer audience at all + 7-th gen console is not over so if they will try to sell it, Microsoft and Sony will came up (in few years) with something different and Nintendo HD console is a trash.

Multiplatform Companies won’t start developing games on HD console and forget about 360 or PS3 user base.

Nintendo won this generation because its the only one console that is really friendly to Casual gamer that don’t buy something rather then Wii Sports Resort or Mario.

2@ Yeah, sure, but whats the point in high end machine? They can’t have next gen videocard, they can only have next gen processor. Wow, so cool. Lets play Mario on it.

I dont quite get what a Wii HD would be, i’d guess it would play old Wii games but would old Wii’s be able to play HD Wii games? If not then why even bother? They’d pretty much be releasing a new console right in the middle of a generation expecting everyone to go out and buy it if they want to continue playing their games. What devs would even bother making games for such a thing? It sounds like the dumbest idea ever.

Well, first of all……where are we with bits? Forgive me, I’m a layman, but it used to be all about 8 bit, 16-bit, 32-bit, 64-bit, etc. Where is Wii, PS3, and X360 in releation to this? After the N64 and PS1 era, I kind of lost track…

I ask because I think Nintendos only logical next move would be to come out with a completely new system that tops both the PS3 and X360 in terms of power. Keep the waggle controller as an option (like the gun), but don’t base the whole system around it.

I think it’ll be a new handheld. With the ‘highly detailed’ graphics and motion contol. I doubt we’ll see a wii replacement for some years. Who knows!

Dr.Ghettoblaster bits mean nothing with modern game consoles, they are basically designed similar to PC’s when it comes down to it. A CPU paired with a GPU along with a memory pool, chipset to handle I/O DVD,HD,USB etc.

The PS3 and Xbox 360 both have 64-bit capable CPU’s but its the GPU that matters more now when it comes to pushing graphics.

I cant ever see Nintendo going for a Wii HD, maybe Nintendo will try to shore up hardcore gamers interest with a dedicated handled like the PSP & avoid Sonys mistakes.

I can’t imagine Nintendo ‘out-powering’ the other two ever again. They just conclusively proved that you can very easily win with the lowest-powered systems.

My prediction: Wii HD will use more advanced motion controls and include a camera, utilised in a similar (but not identical) way as the PSMC. This will allow for more accurate and responsive controls.

The console will feature HD GFX and support surround-sound. It will not, however, be more powerful than the PS3. It will also include either a (removable?) hard-drive or carry solid-state media slots, allowing for transferable game saves and – crucially – DLC.

It will also offer an online connectivity solution that’s superior to Friend Codes, but still way more restrictive than PSN or XBL.

I’d prefer them to make a new console than handheld but don’t get any big vibes that it’ll be the former. I’m not feeling the need for a new handheld either though… Erm… Oh yeah!
