Rumour – PS3 Motion Controller is called Arc [Update]

Tuesday, 19th January 2010 08:20 GMT By Patrick Garratt

arc

VG247 has it on good authority that Sony has named its PS3 Motion Controller “Arc”.

The information comes from a concrete source speaking under conditions of strict anonymity.

Sony has never said what the wand-based system is to be called, admitting only that it was once named Gem, a past internal codename inadvertently outed by EA CEO John Riccittiello at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference last month.

The company is now saying its Motion Controller – the official name thus far – will release “this year”: global boss Kaz Hirai had previously claimed it would be out this March.

The Motion Controller consists of one or two wand devices, each topped with a trackable ball. It works with PSEye.

We saw PlayStation’s tech guys running the system at Develop last year; get the news from that here.

We’ve contacted Sony for comment.

Update – SCEE: “We don’t comment on rumour or speculation.”

They should’ve called it ‘wand’. That’s what everyone calls it already. :-D

@4 Kinda like the Wiimote. Pretty sure that was the name people gave it before it officially had a name.

Geki – Nope. They’ve never released official images and we weren’t allowed to take photos in Brighton.

The ball on the end can change colour depending on whats happening in a game.

Brilliant. Now I have to have one. That’s as innovative as real-time weapon change.

afaik it does 16bit color. so 65000 something colors.

but i think teh linked pics from gekidami, arent they some fanmade renders? But i have to say they do indeed look pretty official.

No idea, jeuxvideo.com are really obscure with their sources. I’ll read something on there then be forced to look around on other sites to know where its actually coming from.
I’d assume they’re official, but then i was unaware no other sites seem to have those pics so they might not be after all.

Geki – Blimey. They do, don’t they? Probably just me being retarded, tbh. I just don’t remember seeing any.

Those are mock-ups done by T3…

“However, in true T3 style, we couldn’t help but flex our visionary powers once more to conjure up what we think the ‘Gem’ could end up looking like. Calling on the help of our creative design friends at The Alloy (who helped bring the 01 Phone and Netpad to life), we’ve now realised our own take on Sony’s PS3 motion controller.”

Yep, classic jv.com, they dont actually state that the pics are from Sony. But they dont offer any sort of source either. Nor do they say that they arent official (and you’d sort of assume they are without being told otherwise.)

Good name, but it won’t do well for them. “Arc” is a harsh consonant-sounding word drawn from science and whilst that will appeal to a male audience, it won’t do much to capture younger children, grey gamers and the stereotypically female casual crowd.

“Wii” is a soft sounding word that evokes “we”, thus implying a sense of togetherness and co-operation. Sony should have gone for something similar… “wand” really is their best option, IMHO.

With RE5: Gold Edition releasing soon, it won’t be long before Sony starts being more official about this.

I’m not sure if that’ll be a good day or not. Already there seems to be a lot of “Good Name”, “Bad Name” and that’s just from this thread. Hate to think what Destructoid’s audience will say.

Personally, I agree with Gheritt… But at least it’s got a name. I’ll just continue to call it the Wand.
Edit: Still time for an ARChilles heel pun? (yes, I’m aware it’s miss-spelled)

at the end of the day it doesnt matter for me at all.
Whoever buys technical stuff because of the name or the look does something wrong and profoundkly misunderstood the point of technic.

You can’t look at it when the box is opened otherwise the spirits will melt your face.

    @ mojo
Anyone ignoring the look&feel of technical stuff in the consumer space profoundly misunderstands its nature.

Arc?! Are you kidding me? What is Sony thinking? Wand sounds gay (reminds me of Harry Potter), so I hope that isn’t it either. Gem sounded nice though.

Still at least someone else doesn’t already have a TM for a controller called Arc eh?
