OPM gives FFXIII 9/10 – whole thing scanned

Monday, 18th January 2010 21:28 GMT By Patrick Garratt

ffxiii6’s posted the entire OPM review of its namesake. What’s that site going to do after March?

The mag’s score is the first major review from an English-speaking publication, as far as we’re aware.

“Big” Dave McCarthy’s written the piece, concluding, “This is the real deal. Final Fantasy XIII makes the hours pass like minutes – a testament to the way the game teases you along with one incentive or another at just the right time, every time.

“It’s next generation Final Fantasy, and that’s all you need to know.”

It’s out in the US and Europe on March 9 for both 360 and PS3.

Johnny reckons NowGamer is sort of major.

As I posted in the forum, page 2 is ace. Look at the time line at the top of the page. FF7 and FF9 artworks are mixed up. Crying shame? No. More over it claims FFX-2 was the first PS2 outing and a direct sequel… to what? There is no FFX on the time line!

    Final Mehstasy XIII.

haha, yeah the logos are mixed up.

“the world’s most famous rpg on the world’s most powerful console. what more needs to be said? fine.”
    I stopped reading here.

A blatant mistake?! You think we can catch Tim Clark again and make him manually fix every copy? :D

My god, there are so many things wrong with page 2.
Even if they’re only choosing FF’s that have appeared on the PS console first, where the hell’s FFVIII? Only one of the three captions are worth a damn/informative and lastly… “Massive Damage”.
I hope like hell they’re taking the piss with that line.

Do they even have an Editor who has an interest in gaming? Are my expectations of an official magazine too high?

This is why I don’t buy printed game news (with the exception of EDGE… that shit’s classy)

Hopefully Digital Foundry will get hold of review code for the 360 version and put it up against the PS3 version. That’s what I’m waiting for really.

  15. DaMan

so apparently it does have massive damage, what about the real time weapon change?

I’m not surprised that a mag like OPM gave FFXIII a high score, and I fully expect official 360 mags to do the same for the 360 version. In fact, it’s such an high-profile game that it will probably get loads of 8s and 9s regardless…
But the thing is that as a Final Fantasy game it’s the worst of them all imo, with everything that most fans like about FF stripped out. I say this from my experience with the Japanese version which I really didn’t like and regretted importing.
Maybe everyone else will disagree with me, but I would be very surprised if this game doesn’t suffer the biggest backlash in FF history. I mean, imagine any FF game… and now take away all the cities, NPCs, all the exploration, all the customization… basically take away everything except the storyline (which is pretty weak in FFXIII from what I could tell unless it picks up massively later on) and the battles. And then you have FFXIII, nothing but battles and cutscenes. Extremely pretty graphics though, at times it impressed me even more than Uncharted 2.

Anyways, I’m looking forward to the reaction from the Western FF fans and from gamers in general… should be interesting to watch :)

    Sounds like FFX to me.

Heard nothing but bad things about FFXIII, obvious fan boi review is obvious. Do. Not. Want.

Bring back FFVII/VIII style of FF.

  19. Soong

@Hunam: It really isn’t, FFX offered far more freedom, exploration, and customization – in fact, FFXIII doesn’t feature any of those things at all like I said in my earlier post. It’s like FFX: Extreme Slimfast Edition in a way, for those who enjoyed the battles in that game and would like to play an entire game filled with LITERALLY nothing but battles and pretty cutscenes inbetween. And this time it isn’t a derogatory description from FF haters for once, the game actually really is nothing more than that.

Like I said, it will be very interesting to see how this game will be received. My guess is that it won’t be pretty.

FFX was basically you running in a straight line for 40 hours with some odd football in the middle.

you’re right they strippped away a lot of things that made FF’s what they are and many fans will be disappointed…
    but looking at another standpoint.FF’s aren’t a continuation of each other.They are different games,different stories,different worlds,different mechanics.
So it’s best to focus on what each new installment brings rather what it lacks from previous installments.
To be clear i am a FF fanboy and i am a bit disappointed from what this new installment lacks but i try to be a little bit more open minded and wait to see what it can deliver.
I’m not impressed by the graphics and fast paced tense combat rather than the story and gameplay

  22. Phoenixblight

I agree with Zoop. Each FF has brought something that I enjoyed some of them I disliked. I read a review and the author brought a lot to my attention, they mentioned which I am inclined to agree from what I have seen and read that Square is rebooting the franchise they are attempting to streamline the game and try to bring a new fanbase to the series.

I am not going to start praising it up and down like I would have ten years ago but I am not going to condemn this FF either because they are trying something different. I will be buying this game in March no matter what the reviews say especially western reviews. I hopeful it won’t be so horrible that I have to resell it like I have done with the last FF.

  23. Soong

@zoopdeloop and Phoenixblight: hey, I understand what you guys are trying to say but keep in mind that I have actually played the game and this is my least favourite FF game by far. Who knows, maybe you’ll like it and every FF fan should at least try it because it does try to do something different. I’m just saying that it will be interesting to see what you two and other fans will think once you get to play the English version.
I’m guessing there will be a huge backlash, but who knows maybe I’m in the minority.

Also keep in mind that I completely agree with zoopdeloop that one has to focus on what each new instalment brings rather what it lacks from previous instalments. I’ve been playing FF games for a long time, so trust me – I know all that.
The point I’m trying to make though is that it brings nothing at all apart from pretty graphics and a slick combat system – but that’s all there is, a new-ish combat system and they took everything else away and didn’t replace it with anything new. It’s all just gone, and all you’re left with is mindlessly running down a narrow corridor from start to finish with nothing to interact with and no room to explore. It’s hard to “focus on what each new instalment brings rather what it lacks from previous instalments” if there’s literally nothing to focus on, know what I’m saying?

to tell you the truth Soong i’m in the middle with this FF.
Either it will be disappointing for me or i will enjoy it.
I know what the game lacks,i’ve heard how linear it is but we all overexaggerate at times so i’ll see it for myself and make my own judgement after finishing it.
Still i do not expect a lot from this game…as i didn’t expected from other games as well which they were disappointing for me.
Devil May Cry 4 ,Resident Evil 5,Silent Hill to name a few.

Developers nowadays put all their time and effort to “multiplatform games” and not the games themselves…last generation was much better, games were exclusives or timed exclusives for any platform and devs were focused on games, not platforms

a guestion…you played FFXIII,i assume you know well the Japanese language?

I am not disagreeing with you and I am rather disappointed by the lack of a lot of things such as the summons, towns, some of the customization. Even the ability to control my entire team in battle.
I will atleast give it a try thats all I can do. Hopefully Versus will turn the series around. I still have some hope for Tetsuya Nomura to pull through.

    #25 5 years ago
  26. zoopdeloop

Nomura definitely will take all the FFXIII negative feedback from some fans and turn it around for Versus

I think Versus was something completely different anyway.

  29. Soong

Well, at least if you guys go in with incredibly low expectations then the game might not be so bad after all! :D I of course went in with the same high expectations I have of every new FF game in the main series that isn’t online and the disappointment was crushing :(

Oh and I still have high expectations of Versus, can’t wait to see more of that game. I’m kinda hoping it’s everything that FFXIII is not.

@zoopdeloop: I can speak and read Japanese well enough to understand the story and the menu screens and stuff. Although I do play with a wordtank next to me to look up a word I don’t know every now and then! :D

  30. Blerk

Still hoping that the reviewers break the habit of a lifetime and don’t give this one a free ride just because it’s Final Fantasy. I’d like to see some honest reviews for a change, please.

  31. TimClark

Yes, I can field that. The boxout is our bad, not David’s. In our defence, it was an eleven day issue which culminated in a tearful Christmas Eve finish. But a fuck up nonetheless.

Yeah, there’s some explanation of that at the beginning. He’s our new man in Japan, it would seem.

  38. zoopdeloop

Versus is a completely different game, different world, characters e.t.c but it has a Final Fantasy title for a reason. If it had nothing to do with Final Fantasy “key elements” then they would have called it something else…like what they did with Kingdom Hearts.
Nomura has implied in an interview that much more well known FF “key elements” will be on Versus rather than FFXIII
There’s a chance Versus will win back fans of the series…we have to see more of it.
