Watch people build a LittleBigPlanet stage in video

After the break. There are an awful lot of menus going on, there. Hopefully the “fun” bit is worth the effort. Take a look.

Considering I only usually have 2 hours gaming time max. per day, I’m not sure I’ll be feeling the LBP love if 90% of the time I’m trawling through endless options.

Just give me something I can ‘play’, innit.

  2. Robo_1 said:

You should be able to play and download other peoples creations quick enough. Although to be fair, if you’re really quite sure you won’t be dabbling with the creation side of LBP, I dare say that half of it’s appeal goes out of the window.

  3. wz said:

So far I don’t really understand what’s so gamey about that game.

  4. wz said:

Seeing the video, I want to play it much. Even if it’s not a game, I want to build crazy-ass levels.

  5. Gamoc said:

How the hell did you expect to build something out of materials without using menus?

And why do people keep saying this game isn’t a game? It’s a sidescrolling platformer, with a built in level creator – and unlimited levels thanks to that.

  6. wz said:

Gamoc: I’m saying that constantly because we get lots of editor coverage, but only second-and-half flashing pieces of gameplay action in retailer videos.

  7. el Croux said:

Me and three mates sitting around in the lounge designing a level on the same screen for an hour, all having a go at it AS we create it, calling it a day so we can download and play some new highly rated level off the YouTube-esque interface and then agreeing to carry on making the level in a few days time while we go our seperate ways sounds like plenty of fun to me.

Easily the freshest thing to hit gaming in a painfully long time.

Also, the smartest thing they did was keep it on a 2D plain . Had it been 3D it’d just be a big messy physics-based frustratathon.

  8. Gamoc said:

wz: I’ve been following this game a lot and there’s a LOT more footage of playing the game than there is creating levels for it.

  9. morriss said:

    Err, no there isn’t.

What are the levels all like? Are there pre-created levels that come with the game? Is there any kind of story attached to the game? Why should I want to get from A to B, what’s the motivation: just to see if I can?

  10. pleasant_cabbage said:

Not wishing to sound like a troll but I can’t see me owning this. I really don’t see the allure of it. I’m not really a creative type so being asked to make your own fun in a game usually turns me off. This’ll be the most traded in game ever if it does sell in any sort of large quantities imo…

  11. Robo_1 said:

Yes, there’s quite an extensive number of pre-made levels that come with the game, whether or not they’re attached to a story I have no idea.

The lack of story doesn’t really bother me that much, I mean was the motivation for continuing Mario games to rescue the princess, or to have fun playing the game? If the levels are good and fun to play, then I see no reason why the simple premise of A – B wouldn’t be enough.

If memory serves, the levels are presented as obstacle courses, so all being well, you should get to run through a finish line at the very least :D

    MARIO.

  13. Tonka said:

I think the Play bit looks absolutely shit TBH. It’s as if the socks are held on invisible wires that can be yanked and dragged in different directions. This might very well be intentional but it looks really horrible to me.

  14. morriss said:

    Who said I liked Mario?

  15. morriss said:

And anyway, the draw of Mario is that it’s a collect-’em-up. Find all the hidden starts etc.

Also Mario gives about 100 levels and many different worlds with different themes and their own sets of traps.

I see nothing of LBP that suggests it’s anywhere close to Mario on any of these things.

Basically, I don’t want a trial-and-error level designer, so matter how cool it looks in design. I want a game.

  16. Gamoc said:

You listed some questions which we’d already been told the answer to…

LBP is coming with 50 premade levels and there will be more online from day one (said the developers). I think I read there may be a storyline, but even if there is, I can’t possibly see why I need a storyline to get from one end of a level to the other in a platformer – Mario had a ’save the princess’ storyline, it was complete crap because nobody cared, they just played the levels.

The levels in LBP are going to be in different styles, if you watch some of the videos you can see some of them, and they will be full of traps and puzzles. You collect ‘fluff’ (though I believe they’ve changed the name to something else that I can’t quite remember).

Put simply; LBP is a fully functional single player platformer, the multiplayer, community and level designer are just things on top of that. I don’t see why people find it so hard to see that.

  17. morriss said:

As I said, and what you’ve completely ignored, is that the drive in Mario wasn’t the plot, it was the fact that you wanted to discover all the secrets and get all the stars.

That’s what every Mario has been about since the beginning of Nintendo time.

LBP seems to offer nothing but some “get to the end of the level” gameplay. Will there be secrets? Will there be things to collect? Will there be a score system? Will there be something to make me want to play the game?

  18. No_PUDding said:

The story line is about a gig. Alex Evans wasn’t specific, but they were all trying to organise a gig, or get to a gig, and they have to travel a LittleBigPlanet to get to it/organise it.

There’s score and things to collect. And I think it’d be crazy not to have secrets. But how they will facilitate that, I don’t know.

  19. wz said:

But then morriss, fifty premade levels. Isn’t that reason enough? Can there be more?

    :D

  20. No_PUDding said:

    Yah.. download them.

When it’s released I will give you all my PSN, and you can all check out quite how second comingly good I am.

I would buy this, but I don’t have a PS3. Nor am I planning on getting one. Anyone who has ever messed around with and constructed working maps with the help of a friend in Halo 3’s forge will instantly see the appeal.

  23. patlike said:

I’m saying nothing. I can tell you for a fact a huge amount of industry pundits are going to be watching LBP’s performance with eagles eyes.

  24. ecu said:

morriss – you can collect things in LBP too. As much as you want, in fact. There are various coloured orbs to collect, for example, and I’ve seen this in several videos. There’s also a score at the end of the level.

But you don’t need to collect stuff or go for the score, you can race through the level. Levels can be fast obstacle courses for speed runs, or they can be full of puzzles, or full of puzzles that require a team to solve. I think there’s a story, there’s definitely bosses. You might even be able to make your own stories and play other peoples stories.

There’s going to be some hugely original usermade levels for this, that I’m really looking forward to. Things that think outside the box and do things with the game that you wouldn’t have ever thought of yourself. I don’t know why people are getting so concerned about not wanting to create stuff. There’ll be easily enough to do even if you never want to touch the editor. It’s the unique selling point of the product, so that’s why they’re always talking about it. If you really aren’t interested in it, then don’t use it. I doubt I’ll mess with it much either, although it’s set up so you can create as little or as much as you want.

  25. No_PUDding said:

LittleBigPlanet Defence Force, really doesn’t need to come here. I asked soemone to buy it the other day, and that was a bit unecessary.

I’ll let the game hype itself when it releases (or not as the case may be). Morriss, just keep an eye on it.

I recenty saw the “Sackzilla” stuff on PSN. That alone would be enough to sell the game to me. Once again, people seem to be forgetting that Media Molecule have said in several interviews that they won’t “trail” stuff you can’t do in the full game. So if you can do stuff like you can in the SackZilla trailer, it’s already sold itself to me.

People who either don’t have the time, the inclination or the imagination to get even a smidgeon (I think Smidgeon is my new word of the week, replacing “quim”) of enjoyment out of this had best steer clear. It’s like buying the most complex graphics program and hoping it’ll just work like an etch a sketch. Personally, even given the complexity of the way the menu system looks like it’s going to work – and given the shortcomings of eyetoy-only for texture and shape capture duties, my imagination’s already working overtime thinking of ways I could produce neat stuff in this (no not just extreme SackPorn).

Time and time again I’ve seen hands-on impressions of this sticking the boot in purely based on 10 mins of dicking around with the tools. So what if it needs more time invested in it? You’re either prepared to or you’re not – and if you’re not, would you kindly not let the door hit your arse on the way out, there’s a dear.

I’m buying a PS3 for this game… but I can completely see where people are coming from with their concerns. If it wasn’t for the fact that I’m going to be playing this co-op with my missus and making levels together then I wouldn’t be interested at all.

The gameplay they’ve showed us hasn’t exactly been awe inspiring. Hell, most of the levels I’ve seen have looked quite tedious. You’re either going to be interested in the user generated stuff or you’re not likely to be interested at all.

  28. pjmaybe said:

Urgh, guess that makes me part of the LBP Defence Force…

  29. morriss said:

Voicing concern about about a game no-one has played yet is allowed, I think.

  30. morriss said:

And “being prepared to [put the time in]” isn’t reality, whereas “Having a life and not having the time to” is.

  31. wz said:

Not with the self-proclaimes LBP Defence Force, it seems.

Besides, the creator stuff looks awesome, I always wanted a sandbox physics playground. But that does not qualify as game for me. And if someone has, as stated, 2hrs of play-time a day, LBP probably will not be a game to them either.

  32. No_PUDding said:

There’s just a lot of misunderstanding surroundign the game.

People like this who think it’s all about create a wrong. Firstly there’s a storyline, in which you unlock things, and get inspiration for level design.

If you want to skip creation, do so, and go and play online with some friends on a very popular level.

That’s why it’s sold to me, becuase I know I want to play this with my friends and I want to create things to show off to them, and I want to see our sutomised characters and laugh about one looking like a transexual.

    That kind of stuff.

    Self proclaimed defense force indeed.

  33. pjmaybe said:

“Voicing concern about about a game no-one has played yet is allowed, I think.”

Works both ways, it’s equally stupid to pan it as to praise it, if you haven’t actually played it :)

“And “being prepared to [put the time in]” isn’t reality, whereas “Having a life and not having the time to” is.”

Yeah but c’moaaaann, you of all people should know that this applies to any game that lasts more than 10 hours flat :)

  34. No_PUDding said:

I think you can actually be downright rude and make assumptions about games.

    I know I have.

Pre-E3, I said Mirror’s Edge was not all it’s cracked up to be, and I still biased about Prince of Persia. I ahven’t played either.

  35. pjmaybe said:

Doesn’t take much to make an educated guess does it? I mean there’s been more than enough footage of the various inner workings of the creation stuff on LBP to make me think that 1) Yeah it’s going to need a lot of time devoted to it and 2) no it’s not going to mean instant gratification.

But I like to tinker with physics-based games. It looks easy enough to link object A to object B with pulley / lever / rope C – therefore I’ll be able to make simple stuff fairly quickly, I reckon. The trick will be producing a working playable level that has some broad appeal, then sharing it with other LBPers.

Being down on it just because it looks like “it’ll take too much time and effort” does make me realise why we very rarely see games of LBPs ilk. Gamers are getting increasingly more apathetic and if they can’t just get what they need from a title, then quickly move on to the next big shiny thing, they get grumpy about it (hell, I should know – I’m the biggest game hoebag out there for chopping and changing what I play on a weekly basis).

I reckon it’ll be ace and you lot should be offering up prizes for the best VG247-inspired levels.
