Sony Online Entertainment returns to action following security attack

Sony Online Entertainment has restored its services and welcomed back users to its titles following a security attack on the company.

Titles such as Everquest II, DC Universe Online and Free Realms are now useable for the first time since May 3, in which it was hit with an "intrusion."

"Our main priority is the safety and security of our customers’ personal information," said SCE president and executive vice president of Sony, Kaz Hirai.

"We are making consumer data protection a full-time, company-wide commitment, and have applied enhanced security technologies so that our customers can feel protected and confident about playing our games.

"We are committed to delivering secure and entertaining games for players of all ages and thank each of our players for their patience and support during this difficult time."

It was discovered that 24.6 million accounts could have been breached, with 12,700 CC and 10,700 DD details also affected. However, only 900 accounts had currently-active details.

The company admitted that it and PSN shared the same type of architecture to "some degree" following the latter's downtime from April 19, of which its now starting to recover from.
