PlayStation 2 support limiting FFXI development

Venerable cross-platform MMORPG Final Fantasy XI is hindered by the necessity of continued PlayStation 2 support, as the aging hardware cannot support new features and requires cosseting to continue basic functions.

Responding to player questions on the official website, The FFXI development team addressed the issue of the game's somewhat inadequate phrase book, which international players rely on to communicate.

"PlayStation 2 memory limitations have placed us in a difficult situation where the addition of new terms to the auto-translate dictionary would require the deletion of existing entries," the post explained, adding "Given this, there are no current plans to add new terms."

As well as limiting possible future content, the PlayStation 2's smaller hard drive has necessitated the creation a brand new patch delivery and install system.

Thanks, Massively.
