Destiny: The Taken King - the new Sunbreaker, Nightstalker and Stormcaller sub-classes explained

The Taken King's sub-class additions literally alter Destiny's gameplay and will directly affect how you approach the year-two content. We'll be adding fuller guides to set-ups for each of the new sub-classes and we play more of the game, but for now here's a detailed explanation, in both text and video, as to how each is going to work.

Titan - Sunbreaker

The new titan sub-class, Sunbreaker, allows Destiny's tanker to attack from range with burning hammers instead of limiting it to face-to-face combat.

Super

Hammer of Sol: Summon a flaming hammer and smash everything to burning death.

  • Modifiers
    • Forgemaster: Throw more hammers, and hammers cause bigger explosions.
    • Suncharge: Activate during Hammer of Sol to charge forward. Attacked enemies in your path explode, chaining fire damage to others.
    • Conflagration: Creates sunspots under Hammer of Sol impacts. Burns everything.

Grenades

  • Fusion Grenade: Causes bonus damage when attached to its target.
  • Thermite Grenade: Emits a burning line of fire towards the intended target.
  • Incendiary Grenade: An explosive grenade that burns enemies for additional damage.

Movement

Lift: Jump again while in the air to activate Lift.

  • Modifiers
    • Increased Height: Gain additional lift (obviously).
    • Increased Control: Better directional control while in the air.
    • Catapult: Upgrades Gain a strong additional burst of momentum.

Melee

Sunstrike: Ignite enemies with a heavy solar strike.

  • Modifiers
    • Melting Point: Burn away your target's defense. Those affected take more damage from both you and allies.
    • Thermal Vent: Sunstrike produces Solar explosion on impact. Kills create a Sunspot that damages any caught enemies.
    • Stoke the Forge: Reduces your your Sunstrike's cooldown. Getting a killing blow with Sunstrike instantly recharges it.

Hunter – Nightstalker

The Nightstalker sub-classes allows Destiny's hunter to work in a support role for the first time. The new super glues groups to an anchor of void energy, allowing other fireteam members to obliterate opponents.

Super

Shadowshot: Tether a large group of foes to a Void Anchor, slowing and silencing them.

  • Modifiers
    • Blood Bound: Tethered enemies explode when killed.
    • Black Hole: Increases the Void Anchor's range, duration and amount of targets it's able to tether.
    • Quiver: Allows Shadowshot to be fired up to three times, but reduces Void Anchor's range.

Grenades

  • Spike Grenade: Attaches to any surface and emits a torrent of void light.
  • Voidwall Grenade: Creates a horizontal wall of burning void light.
  • Vortex Grenade: Creates a vortex that continually damages encompassed enemies.

Movement

Double Jump: Jump a second time after leaving the ground.

  • Modifiers
    • Increased Height: Boosts Double Jump's reach.
    • Increased Control: Better directional control while in the air.
    • Triple Jump: The ever-useful third jump.

Melee

Smoke: Emits a cloud of smoke to slow and disorient those within.

  • Modifiers
    • Envenomed: Adds a toxin that damages enemies within the smoke.
    • Vanish in Smoke: You and allies near Smoke explosions vanish from sight.
    • Snare: Allows smoke to stick to surfaces, detonating when enemies are near.

Warlock – Stormcaller

The Warlock's new Stormcaller sub-class, at its most basic level, turns you into a floating Emperor Palpatine throwing down arc lighting onto bewildered enemies. A teleport ability at the end of the skill tree makes this probably the most envied class update.

Super

Stormtrance: Chain Arc lightning from your hands.

  • Modifiers
    • Landfall: Fire a bolt of lightning into the ground, creating a devastating shockwave around you.
    • Superconductor: Doubles your Stormtrance's chaining capabilities.
    • Ionic Blink: Pressing L3 during Stormtrance produces a short teleport.

Grenades

  • Pulse Grenade: Periodically damages enemies inside its radius.
  • Storm Grenade: Calls down a localized lightning storm.
  • Arcbolt Grenade: Chains bolts of lightning to nearby enemies.

Movement

Glide: Glides with a second jump press after leaving the ground.

  • Modifiers
    • Focused Control: Better directional control while in mid-air.
    • Focused Burst: Provides an initial burst of speed.
    • Balanced Glide: Upgrades both speed and control.

Melee

Thunderstrike: An electrocuting strike.

  • Modifiers
    • Chain Lightning: Thunderstrike chains to an additional enemy.
    • Amplitude: Increases Thunderstrike's range.
    • Rising Storm: Hits with Thunderstrike charge your Super, Ability, and Melee energy.
