Blair Witch developer says working on another Lionsgate franchise is "highly possible"

Bloober Team and Lionsgate working together to adapt another movie franchise is “highly possible," according to a staff member at Bloober Team.

The Layers of Fear developer is currently working with Lionsgate on Blair Witch, a game based on the movie series of the same name, which is due for release August 30.

Set in 1996, ex-cop Ellis and his dog Bullet join the search for a missing child in the wild forests of Maryland. Armed with a flickering flashlight and a night-vision video camera, it doesn’t take long for the rescue mission to take a turn for the paranormal.

“It’s the first time that we’ve worked on someone else’s IP,” Maciej Glomb, Team Developer at Bloober Team told VG247 at a Blair Witch preview event. “So for sure it was a challenge from the beginning, because it’s not something that you make by yourself. You have to contact the holder and talk about stuff.

But Lionsgate was very helpful and wanted to cooperate and give us the most freedom that they could. It was a good experience - it’s highly possible that we’ll do some other piece in the future.”

The most obvious horror franchise in Lionsgate’s roster would be the Saw series. Saw was twice adapted into a game by the now defunct Zombie Studios in 2009 and 2010, but received mixed to poor reviews. However Lionsgate could be looking to use Bloober Team’s pedigree for blending story-driven horror with a rich sense of atmosphere to right this missed opportunity.

“As far as I know our companies knew each other before,” Glomb says of how Lionsgate and Bloober Team first came to work together.

“After Layers of Fear hit Early Access Lionsgate probably liked what they saw, and thought it might be a good idea for us to make the Blair Witch game.”

Blair Witch isn’t the only Lionsgate distributed film series that’s getting a tie-in video game. John Wick Hex is currently in development at Thomas was Alone and Volume developer Bithell Games.

Is there another Lionsgate franchise that you’d like to see Bloober Team take a crack at? Don’t say The Hunger Games. Or La La Land.
