Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: How to Parry an Attack

Combat is a tricky thing to master in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and timing a parry perfectly can be diffucult. In this guide we'll show how to parry an attack perfectly so you can knock back an attacker, staggering them and opening up a chance for a counterattack.

How to Parry in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

As we previously mentioned, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has a full parry mechanic, and it’s excellent for getting yourself out of a tight situation. The parry mechanic is performed by pressing both the left and right bumpers on your controller at the same time, but as is the case with every parry mechanic in every game, timing is everything.

The trick to parrying an attack perfectly is to press both bumpers when you see a small white flash from the weapon of your opponent. This indicates that they’re in the process of committing to an attack, but if you let loose with a parry as soon as you see this small white streak, you’ll always parry their attack perfectly. This leaves your opponent briefly stunned, meaning you can let rip with a few counterattacks of your own.

How to Dodge Attacks

If you played 2017’s fantastic Assassin’s Creed Origins, then good news, for the combat in Odyssey hasn’t changed a whole lot. There’s the new parry mechanic (which we’ll cover further down), but for now, what you need to know is that the combat in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is very much about moving and dodging with perfect timing.

Avoiding or parrying attacks can be vital when it comes to surviving combat, especially in long battles where you're liable to struck from every direction. | Ubisoft

If you're cutting through Assassin's Creed Odyssey, we've got everything you'd ever need at our Walkthrough here. Whether it's combat, stealth or finding the best items, we can provide.

You can check out the controller overview for the PS4 version of the game just below, and it’s important to remember where the dodge button is at all times. If you can dodge perfectly outside of an opponent’s attack whenever you see a streak of white or red light emanating from their weapon, you’ll take yourself out of harm's way. On top of this, if you can dodge at exactly the last moment, time will temporarily slow down, letting you run back in for a few hits.

Other than that, it’s always good not to get too greedy in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Laying into an enemy with multiple quick attack is great, but at some point they’re going to recover, and let loose with attacks of their own. Backing off after a few quick hits is not only great for avoiding this, but it also lets you use any of your combat abilities that have recharged by now, all of which will be tied to the left bumper, plus any of the face buttons on your controller.
