Nintendo and esports go together better than you’d think – and today that means you can watch a bunch of new high-level Super Smash Bros Ultimate matches.

The sometimes rough-and-ready world of esports doesn’t necessarily seem like it’d always fit with Nintendo’s squeaky clean image, but to Nintendo’s credit the company’s UK arm is currently making a big esports push in the UK with their Nintendo UK Versus Live event – we hope the first of many events designed to showcase competitive gaming in Nintendo titles.

Over the course of this weekend Nintendo UK VS is showcasing competitive play in a range of games coming to or already on Nintendo Switch including Dragon Ball FighterZ, Fortnite, Pokken Tournament, Splatoon and Smash Bros Ultimate. We popped to the event ourselves yesterday and were pretty impressed – it’s set in a great little space and had a lot of stations for casual play, room for bring your own console play and a tournament zone for the two main games – Splatoon and Smash.

While Smash director Masahiro Sakurai claims that Super Smash Bros Melee was “too technical”, and that his aim is to make Smash Ultimate accessible, tournament players are still digging deep to see what hardcore competitive play potential the game has. As such, they’re turning up to hands-on events like this en masse.

Today Nintendo’s stream of the event will feature Fortnite, Paladins, Overcooked 2, Pokken Tournament, Splatoon 2 and of course Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Smash fans have traveled from across the UK for a chance to get their hands on the E3 build of the game – so you can expect some dedicated Smash players who really know what they’re doing on stream.

Smash starts at 6pm UK time and runs until 8pm – but the rest of the stream is also likely going to be well worth checking out.

If you’d rather read about Smash Bros instead, we played a good hour of it back at E3 and absolutely loved it – and we’ve also compiled a detailed Smash Ultimate character roster and level list of everything announced so far.
