Blizzard had a particular style in mind for Overwatch’s Doomfist, and Terry Crews just wasn’t the guy for that.
Crews himself said as much in a recent interview, and that he understood that the studio is making the best decision for the game.
Although Crews isn’t upset about it, some of the fans who more or less thought his casting was all but confirmed still feel like he should’ve been the man to play Doomfist. During Blizzard’s panel at the San Diego Comic-Con, many shouted his name repeatedly.
After the panel, Gamespot caught up with Blizzard developers to get one final answer about why Crews wasn’t considered.
“We love Terry. Terry’s awesome. He came and visited us. We had a great time,” senior designer Michael Chu said.
“When we were looking for Doomfist, we were looking for something very specific given his role in the game and everything. When we were early in the audition process, we heard Sahr, who’s the actor who plays Doomfist, and he just blew us away immediately. Once we heard his voice, it was like, ‘Holy crap. That’s Doomfist.'”
Sahr Ngaujah does give the character a completely different tone to what we expected it would sound like. This makes sense in the context of who he’s supposed to be, vs the image so many got of him from the in-game posters.
Regardless, Doomfist’s voice will remain the same for now, and you can listen to it for yourself when the character goes live for everyone on July 27.
