Naughty Dog dives deeper into the team-oriented aspects of Uncharted 4’s multiplayer and the lessons learned from working on The Last of Us.
Uncharted 4 developer Naughty Dog talked to Gamespot about how The Last of Us multiplayer inspired some of the elements you see in Uncharted 4’s, and how players can change their opinions of new features, even if it seems like they’re refusing some at first.
“We wanted to facilitate teamwork,” lead multiplayer designer Robert Cogburn told the site. “In Uncharted 2 and 3, one of the big hurdles, particularly in 3, was that teamwork was possible, but it was incredibly hard to facilitate.
“What we’ve really tried to do with the systems we’ve created in 4, like the Mysticals and Sidekicks, when you get teams that are combining those things, you get a lot of synergy with those systems.”
Cogburn reiterated the goal with Uncharted 4’s multiplayer was to have a strong sense of teamwork, while maintaining fast and fluid movement. Some of the new additions, namely the mystical items and sidekicks, weren’t always popular with the players, according to Cogburn.
“At first, they said, ‘I don’t like the Mysticals.’ Then it’s, ‘Oh, no, the Mysticals are pretty cool,'” Cogburn said. “Then people said, ‘I don’t really like the sidekicks.’ Although feedback on the sidekicks has been mixed and we’re definitely going to start addressing that.”
Cogburn elaborated that outside of their gameplay benefits, mysticals and sidekicks were a natural evolution of Uncharted’s supernatural elements.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is due for release March 18 on PlayStation 4.
